ESTELLINE — Vylene Beckman, age 98, of Estelline and formerly of the Cavour and Huron area, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at Estelline Nursing and Care Center.

Her funeral service is 2 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron, with entombment at Restlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

Visitation, with her family present, is from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday afternoon. A prayer service and time of sharing will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday evening at the church.

Vylene was born July 4, 1926, on a farm five miles north of Cavour to Adolf and Paulina (Waltz) Hintz. At the age of 8, her family moved to a farm northwest of Yale. She attended school for four years in Yale, then attended Connell School, a country school thru 8th grade. She attended Yale High School for 2 years, then went to Huron and worked at Newberry’s, a 5-and-10 cent store.

In January of 1945, she married Elmer Beckman of Cavour. To this union, three children were born, Bruce Beckman, Doreen Peterson and Mary Ann, who died as an infant.

During most of her lifetime, she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Yale, until it closed, she then became a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron. While attending Yale church, she taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of LWML society for many years and served in several offices.

She enjoyed sewing for her daughter and herself. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, canning and having flower beds. She enjoyed playing cards and hosted many parties for family and friends. She especially enjoyed teaching her sevengrandchildren to play pinochle, which became a tradition on holidays, including prizes!

Elmer and Vylene lived on the Beckman farm for 63 years, hosting a Century Farm Party in 2007 for about 200 family, friends and neighbors. Vylene loved hosting parties, and Elmer was her willing helper.

In 2008 they moved to Huron, where they lived until Elmer passed in 2019. In 2022, Vylene was moved to Estelline Nursing and Care Center in Estelline, to be closer to her son and daughter, and lived there until her passing.

She is survived by her children, Bruce (Janelle) Beckman of Lake Preston and Doreen (Kurt) Peterson of Lake Norden; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Vylene is preceded in death by her six siblings; Loretta Anderson, Vera DeWolf, infant brother Wilbur, Phyllis Moeller, Leroy Hintz and Gilbert Hintz. She was also preceded by her daughter-in-law, Betty Beckman.
Memorials may be directed to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church or Mainstreet Living.
