HURON — A strong start propelled top-seeded Sanborn Central-Woonsocket past fourth-seeded Wolsey-Wessington in the semifinals of the 281 Conference Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Monday at Huron Arena.
After holding a 14-2 advantage a the end of the opening quarter, the Lady Blackhawks used a 20-11 run in the second quarter to build a 34-13 advantage at the half.
The Lady Warbirds managed to narrow their deficit in the third quarter by outscoring Sanborn Central-Woonsocket 19-14, but the Lady Blackhawks pulled away in the final quarter for the win.
Megan Poyer had a game-high 18 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, to lead Sanborn Central-Woonsocket, which improved to 7-3. She also had team-high totals with nine rebounds, four assists and seven steals.
Tessa Jensen also reached double figures for the Lady Blackhawks with 16 points, while Kayle White and Trinity Boschee had seven and six points, respectively.
Cortney Sprecher was the lone player to reach double figures for the Lady Warbirds, with 14 points. Macie Luce had eight points, while Ally Boomsma and Raquel Nelson each had five points.
Sprecher also snagged 11 rebounds for Wolsey-Wessington, which is now 4-4, while Chantel Haider had five assists and five steals.
Wolsey-Wessington will play Highmore-Harrold for third place at 3 p.m. Thursday, while Sanborn Central-Woonsocket plays Hitchcock-Tulare for the championship at 6 p.m.
Hitchcock-Tulare 41, Highmore-Harrold 38
The third-seeded team in the girls’ 281 conference, Hitchcock-Tulare Lady Patriots, escaped with a 41-38 victory over the Highmore-Harrold Pirates, second-seeded in the tournament, during the championship semifinals rounds on Monday night at Huron Arena.
Hitchcock-Tulare advance to the championship game against the top-seeded Sanborn Central-Woonsocket Lady Blackhawks, which will take place at 6 p.m., Thursday at Huron Arena.
Elizabeth Salmen totaled a game-high of 13 points for the Lady Patriots, another 11 points were tallied by Ashley Masat, while Dannyn Peterson added 10 more points. Hitchcock-Tulare improved its record to 4-5 with the win.
The Pirates, now with an even 5-5 record, had three players that recorded 10 points each, Taylor Chavez, Halle Tvedt and Madison Bollweg, to lead the team.
Highmore-Harrold will tangle with the Wolsey-Wessington Lady Warbirds, fourth-seeded in the conference, for third place at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Huron Arena.
Consolation semifinals
James Valley Christian 53, Iroquois 21
The James Valley Christian Lady Vikings dominated the Iroquois Lady Chiefs with a 53-21 victory, in a consolation game at the girls’ basketball 281 conference on Monday at the Huron Arena.
An improved season record of 3-5 is held for the Lady Vikings with the win, as Brenna Held led with 23 points and eight rebounds, Karilyn Wieting tallied 12 points, while another 10 were added by Josalyn Wipf.
Katie Dubro led the Lady Chiefs with seven points. Iroquois suffered a drop to an 0-11 record after the loss.
James Valley Christian will play for the consolation championship title against Wessington Springs on Thursday at the Huron Arena.
Wessington Springs 45, Sunshine Bible Academy 28
The Wessington Springs Lady Spartans bounced back to claim a 45-28 victory over the Sunshine Bible Academy Crusaders after ending the first period with a one-point disadvantage in the consolation semifinals round during the girls’ basketball 281 conference on Monday at the Huron Arena.
Grace Gran recorded a game-high of 15 points to lead the Lady Spartans, now 2-10 on the season, while Piper Jones added eight more to assist in the win.
The Crusaders were led by Lindsey Wilken with 14 points, also leading the rebounders with 13, while Beth Konechne tallied six points and 10 rebounds. Sunshine Bible Academy fell to a record of 2-7 on the season.
Wessington Springs will play for the consolation championship on Tuesday at the Huron Arena.
