Veterans presented Quilts of Valor

HURON — The Huron Area Quilters Guild presented four specially made quilts to local veterans in honor of their services on Saturday morning at the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church.
Through the Quilts of Valor Foundation, the Huron Quilters Guild has worked together to produce six to eight “Quilts of Valor,” annually for the past decade.
“All of us in the guild worked together on the quilts for our veterans,” explained Sandy Kissner President of Huron Area Quilters Guild. “We have 19 members currently in the guild, and we do these Quilts of Valor to honor our local veterans as an appreciation of their service.”

Four veterans received a quilt and had the opportunity to speak about their experiences to the friends, families and community members who came to show their support. HAQG member Sheryl Kloss opened up the program with an enlightening prayer and welcome to all, followed by leading the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Local veteran Ferd Wipf was introduced to the crowd by HAQG member Marlys Abbondondolo. Then Gwynne McDonald, also a guild member, invited Ted Peterman up to be presented with his quilt. Philip Maher was the third veteran to be honored, introduced by Kissner, while guild member Carolyn Metter then gave the microphone to James Rudy, which wrapped up the presentations. Loved ones gathered to take pictures in excitement before sitting together to enjoy refreshments and treats.
There were six quilts made for Saturday’s event, however two veterans, Norvin Rudd and Orvel Schmit, were unable to attend so the guild went to deliver the quilts in person later in the day. Another two Quilts of Valor were given to Victor Schneider and Carrol Ray back in February, which totals eight quilts made and given to veterans this year in the Huron area.
An abundance of appreciation and love was shown during this event. The guild showed great happiness and appreciation to those who attended and assisted in continuing the Quilts of Valor project in Huron. The public are also encouraged to share with the guild any veterans who the HAQG could honor in the coming year.
Kissner explained, “The guild is already working on next year’s Quilts of Valor, we work together in the guild to donate quilts to causes in the community. We have made quilts for hospitals and the Jan Manolis Family Safe Center. Anyone is welcome to join the guild. The Mount Calvary Lutheran Church is very welcoming to us, we meet the first and third Saturday of the month and it’s always a fun get together.”
President Sandy Kissner may be contacted at 352-1587, and invites anyone to reach out for more information about the guild, to refer a veteran for a Quilt of Valor, or to find out any additional work the guild provides to benefit the community.
