Orth, Robinson selected to Class B all-state second team

Goertz, Luethmers, Moore receive honorable mention

HURON — Senior Avery Orth of Wessington Springs and junior Kaylie Robinson of James Valley Christian were named to the second team of the Class B all-state girls’ basketball team, which was announced today.

Orth, a 6-2 center, averaged 17.4 points per game this season for the Lady Spartans and pulled down 10 rebounds per game. She played on the varsity team aa and eighth-grader and was a 4-year starter during her high school career.

“Avery was a major factor in helping our program going from three wins her freshman year to playing in SoDak 16 her junior year and being one of top teams her senior year — winning 281 Conference Tournament and regular season titles,” Wessington Springs coach Jason Kolousek said. “Avery worked very hard to make herself the best she could be and did all she could to help the team be successful.  Her leadership will be missed. “

Orth will be taking her talents to play for Dakota Wesleyan University in the fall.

Robinson, a 5-6 guard, was the floor general for James Valley Christian this season during its run to a seventh-place finish in the Class B State Tournament. She averaged 16.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.3 steals this season.

“Her ability to see the court and find her teammates is invaluable to us,” JVC coach Krista Robinson said. “This season she really worked hard being a threat from all points on the floor and we were able to utilize her size and post her up effectively.  She did a great job controlling the boards for us and providing us with strength inside that we needed to battle.”

Robinson has scored 909 points and has 612 rebounds entering her senior season for the Lady Vikings. She recorded a career-high 31 points against Wolsey-Wessington in the Region 2B Tournament this season and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds against Iroquois/Lake Preston in the 281 Conference Tournament.

Area players earning honorable mention on the Class B all-state team were junior Alexa Goerts of JVC, sophomore Hazel Luethmers of De Smet and junior Adison Moore of Iroquois/Lake Preston.

Goertz, a 5-9 guard, averaged 15.9 points and 3.6 rebounds this season for the Lady Vikings.

“Alexa was a big offensive threat for us all season. She was another guard of ours that caused mismatch issues, so we were able to utilize her inside out to get points when we needed them,” Robinson said. “Alexa worked hard to finish at the rim or get herself to the free-throw line, where she shot 77.4%.

“Alexa is a great defensive player and helped slow down other teams best players. Alexa is a competitor and she showed again this season that she will battle until the end,” she said.

Goertz sits just 13 points shy of the 1,000-point milestone entering her senior season for JVC.

Luethmers, a 6-0 guard/forward, afters 19.3 points, 7 rebounds and 2.4 assists this season for the Lady Bulldogs. She also had 49 steals and nine blocks.

“Hazel drew a lot of attention from opposing teams on the offensive side of the ball. We saw multiple different defenses to try and slow down her ability to score,” De Smet coach Brendon Pitts said. “She has the ability to shoot from the outside, drive to the rim and post up, which makes her a tough player to defend.

“On the defensive side of the ball, she was able to disrupt a lot of passes, and rebound the ball well, which created some opportunities for us,” he said.

Moore, a 5-6 guard, averaged 19.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists this season for Iroquois/Lake Preston. She also tallied 76 steals.

Senior Ava Lingemann of Ethan was selected as the Class B Player of the Year.

Lingemann was joined on the Class B all-state first team by senior Skyler Volmer of Lyman, senior Paige Kjerstad of Wall, junior Addalyn Steffensen of Arlington; junior Althea Gust of Centerville and senior Abby Asleson of Howard.

Orth and Robinson were joined on the second team by sophomore Makalee Scott of Lyman, senior Stevie Wittler of Sully Buttes, junior Emma Marshall of Centerville and senior Nora Dinger of Wall.
