HURON — Phillip J. Hohm, age 78, of rural Huron, died Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 2, at the Bethel Mennonite Brethren Church with burial in the church cemetery. His service will be live-streamed.

His visitation, with the family present, will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with a prayer service and time of sharing to begin at 6 p.m.

Phillip James Hohm, the son of Clarence and Ida (Hofer) Hohm, was born on April 26, 1945, at Huron, South Dakota.

Phil attended the Sunflower Country School and graduated from James Valley Christian School. He then continued his education at Tabor College at Hillsboro, Kan.

He was baptized in the James River by the Rev. George L. Classen in 1955. He was a life-long member of the Bethel Mennonite Brethren Church of rural Yale. He was active in the church choir and had served as a Sunday school teacher.

In 1967, Phil got his private pilot’s license and was involved in flying new airplanes from Vero Beach, Fla., to the Huron area. He also was a member of the Civil Air Patrol at Huron.

In August 1968, he married Vicki Kleinsasser and they had one daughter, Amy. They later divorced, but remained close friends. Vicki passed away Jan. 23, 1998.

From 1978-1984, Phil did over the road trucking, hauling meat to California and Oregon and bringing back produce to the Minneapolis area. For most of his life, he has been involved in farming, raising sheep, soybeans, corn, sunflowers, wheat and alfalfa.

In 1984, Phil became a charter member of Pheasants Unlimited, Inc. He was past president and secretary/treasurer of the organization.

In 1994, he became a charter member of the Windriders A.B.A.T.E. chapter of Huron. Since then, he also served on the board of directors for the A.B.A.T.E. of South Dakota. As a Windrider member, Phil served in many roles, and was honored as member of the year. Since 1997, he wrote monthly columns for the Freedom Flyer, the A.B.A.T.E. of South Dakota’s newsletter.

Phil was a charter member of the Christian Motorcycle Association the Heartland Gospel Riders of Huron, where he served in many roles.

Some of Phil’s hobbies included photography, snowmobiling, riding his Harley, showing his 1946 Ford Street Rod at car shows, hunting, collecting guns of all kinds, riding dirt bikes, riding his side- by-side in the Black Hills, and having fun with his grandkids, Ellie and Jacob Kempf.

On July 28, 2007, Phil married Norma Schnathorst at Huron.

Phil and Norma traveled with their Harley trike in all the states west of the Mississippi River. They rode to California riding through 10 states. They also rode to Glacier Park and across Canada. Phil and Norma drove their 1946 Ford Street Rod to the “Back to the Fifties” in St. Paul, Minn., in 2015.

Norma passed away April 15, 2016.

Phil married Pamela Isackson on July 9, 2022, at Vale. They enjoyed going to car shows, talking motorcycles, and visiting family together.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Vicki Hohm and Norma Hohm; infant daughter, Rebecca Hohm; and sister-in-law, Linda Hohm.

Grateful for having shared in Phil’s life are his wife, Pamela of Huron; his daughter, Amy (Jeff) Kempf of Huron; two grandchildren, Ellie and Jacob Kempf; his bonus daughters, Lynn (Matt) Klundt of Aberdeen, Terri (Ricky) Nikoli of Yale and Annie Julius of Huron; and his bonus grandchildren, Mona, Ava, Evelyn, Simon and James.

His memories will be cherished by Norma’s family, Sheldon (Sandy) Schnathorst of Waterloo, Iowa, Frank (Korey Busack) Carlson of Sioux Falls, Bryan (Jennifer) Schnathorst of Miller, Robert “Bob” (Michelle) Carlson of Huron, Karla Durnil of Union, Iowa, Schaun (Shelley) Schnathorst of Huron, Alvin “Skip” Schnathorst of Huron, Mindy (Adam) Zaborowski of Rapid City and Schalane (David) Bucklin of Huron; and several bonus grandchildren and great-grandchildren from the Schnathorst Family.

He is also survived by his three siblings, Dr. Charles (Marlene) Hohm of Vancouver, Wash., Beth (Chris) Serck of Hudson, S.D., and Ludwig (Julie) Hohm of Yale; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The family asks that memorials be made in Phil’s name to Windriders ABATE and the Christian Motorcycle Association.
