HURON A matchup of two Class B ranked teams closed out the first day of the Huron Holiday Classic on Saturday with the No. 4 Lyman Raiders establishing a big lead early in the game and never letting the No. 2 Sanborn Central/Woonsocket back in the game, coming away with a 57-46 win.
Lymans defense shut down the Blackhawks early on, leading to multiple turnovers and layups for the Raiders. In their set offenses, Sanborn Central/Woonsockets defense helped to keep the Raiders off the board until foul trouble put multiple Blackhawk starters into foul trouble. Even so, Lyman needed a 6-0 run to close the quarter to finish the first quarter with a 14-8 lead.
With multiple starters on the bench due to foul issues for Sanborn Central/Woonsocket for long stretches, Lyman took advantage on defense in the second quarter, recording multiple steals and layups as they pushed the lead to 27-14 at the half.
Sanborn Central/Woonsocket came out firing in the second half, cutting into the Raider lead, but Lyman continued to get layups on offense and defense. While they closed the gap in the third frame, the Blackhawks headed into the fourth period still trailing Lyman 40-33.
Lymans offensive prowess was simply too much for the Blackhawks in the final quarter, as the Raiders pulled away to close out a 57-46 victory.
Senior Brooke Palmer was the leading scorer for Lyman, now 4-0, on the night with 21 points and five rebounds. Bree Smart added 12 points.
The Blackhawks fell to 2-1, though three SCW players reached double figures, led by Alexa Goertz with 15. Liz Boschee bucketed 14 and Kaylie Robinson added 10.
Boschee and Robinson each had four rebounds to lead the Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks return to action Saturday on the road at Mount Vernon/Plankinton. Lyman hosts Lower Brule Saturday.
