Informational meeting regarding Gibbs Park announced

HURON During the Huron City Commission meeting Monday evening, Parks & Recreation Director Chad Schroder presented during public forum. He informed the commission and public that an informational meeting regarding future plans for Gibbs Park/Stony Run Park would be held on Wednesday, November 19, at 5:30 p.m., in the Blackburn Room at the Campus Center, 333 9th St. SW.

Schroder explained the importance of public input at the meeting for the landscape architecture students who designed the concept plans for the park.

It gives a chance for the SDSU landscape architecture students to showcase the work that theyve put together for us in that area, Schroder stated. I think its an exciting time for that area.

With no objections from the public and all inspections passed, the commission approved renewal of the citys package off-sale liquor, on-sale liquor and retail on-off sale wine and cider licenses for 2026.

Commissioners also:
– Approved the employment of Titus Waldner as police officer, effective Nov. 17, with a 1040-hour probationary period for supplemental benefits and a 1-year probationary period per FOP contract.
– Approved the classification change of Monty Benally from Library Assistant in Circulation and Outreach Services to the Teen/Tween Librarian position, effective Dec. 1, with a 60-day probationary period.
– Approved to advertise and post the job opening for the library assistant in circulation and outreach services position.
– Approved the voluntary retirement of Karen Weeldreyer, foreman in the Solid Waste Department, effective Nov. 29. Karen was thanked for 21 years of service to the city.
– Approved updates to the solid waste foreman job description and approved advertising and posting the job opening.
– Approved an addendum to the lease agreement with Blue Law Firm for space in City Hall.
– Approved the propane bid from CHS Farmers Alliance of Huron for Nov. 1, 2025, to Oct. 31, 2026.
– Approved the Midco ISP service renewal.

The solid waste department announced that yard waste bins will not be picked up this week and then next week, November 17-21, will be the final yard waste pick up of the year on assigned pick up days. Solid waste also announced that the rubble site would be closed November 27-30 and the routes for Thursday, Nov. 27, and Friday, Nov. 28, would both be picked up on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Finance Director Paullyn Carey then led a work session regarding upcoming election changes that will affect the citys election ordinances based on law changes made in the legislature last session.
