The Huron Solid Waste Department is pleased to announce that the new Yard Waste & Recycling Drop-off area is now fully operational! There have been a lot of changes that we would like the public to be aware of.
The first major change is that access is controlled by a kiosk. Individuals using the area need to scan their driver’s license at the kiosk. For Huron City residents, the kiosk will let them in for free 4 times a month for yard waste and 4 times for recycling. County residents will be prompted to use a debit or credit card. The total fee is a flat $5.47 per dump or set up an account with the Solid Waste Department.

Businesses using the drop-off need to get a Yard Card from the scale-house to access the drop-off. The Yard Card will charge their account $5.31 for each dump. Businesses may not use the residential access method. During regular hours, however, businesses can bring their yard waste across the scale at the Transfer Station at no cost.

The second big change is the addition of recycling bins inside the Yard Waste area. The recycling dumpsters have been removed from City Hall and the Library, and recycling can now be brought to the drop-off area. The recycling materials we accept have not changed, but please remember to rinse food containers and remove all packing material from cardboard. Styrofoam and plastic wrap are not recyclable. Large pieces of cardboard that don’t fit in the bin can be brought to the scale for free.
We need the public’s help to keep the Yard Waste Drop-off Area in good order! Please don’t leave bags or trash of any kind. Trees and branches larger than 3” diameter or 6’ in length still cost $35/Ton and need to go across the scale. We have a nice camera system to help enforce the policies, but the best method is for the community to take pride in our new facility! Huron Solid Waste continues to be one of the most forward-thinking facilities in the State of South Dakota, and with the community’s support, we will continue to increase our efficiency and keep our city clean and safe!
