HURON –– The Huron City Commission heard from Water and Sewer Superintendent Rob Rieger about watering restrictions that came into effect on June 1 and continue through September 30. This is part of the city’s annual water conservation schedule.
Those residents who have odd-numbered addresses can water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Those with even-numbered addresses can water on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All residents are able to water on Sunday. No watering should be done between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., during the hottest part of the day.
Rieger clarified that, even with the recent dry weather, the city is at no risk of running out of water, but these conservation measures ensure water is available at all residents at all times, especially in case of emergency.
The meeting opened with the commission meeting as the board of adjustment to consider a variance request filed by Jeremy Meyer at 206 Iowa Ave. SE to construct a garage closer to the property line than setback would allow. This was approved with conditions.
During public forum, residents were encouraged to vote on Tuesday. Angela Bailey, Huron Public Library director, was recently elected to a position with the South Dakota Librarians Association. New assistant solid waste director Andrew Hanson was also introduced to the commission as part of his first day on the job.
The commission approved two bids, first to Flint Hills Resources for $101,835 for asphalt emulsion. The second was a bid by Lot Pros Inc. for $66,125 for asphalt and concrete crack sealing.
A payment request for the 2026 sanitary sewer manhole lining project was approved to Key Contracting for $90,608.80.
The commission approved a quit claim deed to transfer property in Southtown to Greater Huron Development Corporation.
A public hearing was held on the transfer of a retail on-off sale malt beverage and S.D. farm wine license at The Taphouse, doing business as The Vault, to new ownership. With no objections, the transfer was approved.
The commission approved a phone services agreement with Midcontinenet Communications in the amount of $790.95 per month. Repair to the freight elevator at City Hall was approved with additional funding of $8,712. from second penny funds.
Huron Event Center also sought additional funding to upgrade new doors at the event center to fireproof doors. The cost was an additional $7,500 to come from the Huron Event Center Foundation. This was approved.
Commissioners also:
– Accepted the voluntary resignation of Curtis Ryman, Park Maintenance 2, effective June 5.
– Approved the internal posting for a Park Maintenance 2 position, as well as an internal posting advertising for a Park Maintenance 1 position.
– Acknowledged that Dillon Corcoran, Park Maintenance 1, has completed his probationary period to make him eligible for supplementary benefits effective June 1.
– Approved seasonal employees for Memorial Golf Pro Shop, Parks and Recreation, and Splash Central Waterpark.
– Approved Tamiko Shkuratoff to serve on the library board of trustees, effective June 1.
– Approved a special on-sale alcoholic beverage license application by 1 Oak Events for the Chamber Mixer on June 9, hosted by Center for Independence.
– Approved a special on-sale alcoholic beverage license application by Sportsman Bar on July 3 from 4:30 p.m. to midnight for the Dusting Off Dakota celebration.
– Approved the change in collection route start time to 6 a.m., beginning June 8.
After the public meeting was concluded, the commission held a work session regarding city government structure.
