HURON – The Huron School Board introduced items for the 2026-2027 school year during Monday’s meeting, including handbooks, the 2026-2027 budget hearing, hourly wage rates for the school year, and heard about the updated property insurance costs as they prepare for the 2026-2027 school year. Business manager Kelly Christopherson reported that the property insurance went down more than $80,000 when the budget actually expected an increase of roughly the same amount.
The recent election was canvassed. Christopherson reported a 19 percent turnout for the election, which was actually lower than the last election that the School Board had. The election previous to that was just 11 percent, so it was within the range the school had seen in recent school board elections. The election had Shelly Siemonsma with 1,019 votes and Sarah Meirose with 758. The election results were approved.
Superintendent Dr. Kraig Steinhoff gave the school year’s bullying report. He reported that 26 allegations were made, with seven founded incidents. That compares to 51 alleged and 13 founded from 2024-2025 and 34 alleged and 19 founded in 2023-2024.
The board also:
– Approved three new hires.
– Approved seven new resignations.
– Approved first reading for four new policies.
– Ratified classified staff negotiations.
The board then met for a goals report work session after the public meeting was complete.
