HURON – The Huron City Commission heard from Finance Director Paulynn Carey about the June 2 city commission election. She stated that due to the joint election with the school and county, the county did the canvass count. She offered the numbers for each precinct in voting between Drew Weinreis and Josh Carr for city commission, with each precinct very close in voting and the final tally showing Weinreis with a small 42-vote margin, 815-773.

Carey expressed that the election had a 27.7% turnout in Huron precincts for the city election, which is higher than many years, but within range of “good” turnout years prior to moving the election back. The commission congratulated Weinreis on his win and thanked Carr for putting his name on the ballot and being willing to serve.

The commission approved a memorandum of understanding with Coborns for a storage container to be placed in the parking lot for collection of soft plastic. Commissioner Rhonda Kludt reminded residents that three drop sites for soft plastics (such as grocery bags) are the Parks and Recreation office, the Huron Chamber, and the Huron library. The plastics will be collected from those three spots and then those locations will take the collections to this container for transport.

Kludt also reminded residents that solid waste collection routes will start at 6 a.m., beginning this week and moving forward. She also read the upcoming holiday hours for the solid waste department for Friday, June 19, for the Juneteenth holiday. The solid waste rubble site will be closed both Friday and Saturday and Friday’s regular collection routes are moved to Wednesday, June 17.

The commission also:

– Approved seasonal employees for Parks and Recreation and Splash Central Waterpark.

– Approved the resignation of Clair Buesing from the planning commission.

– Approved a raffle permit submitted by the chamber ag committee for pedal tractors to be raffled on June 25 and 26.

– Approved a special on-sale alcohol liquor license application for Scoreboard for July 3, from 4:30 p.m. to midnight.

After regular business was completed, the city discussed artwork in the downtown area, including a donated sculpture, to potentially begin the artwork as the next step of the beautification of the downtown area.
