McGirr appointed to Beadle County Commission

HURON –– The Beadle County Commission met Thursday, June 4, to canvass the June 2 primary and local election. After canvass was complete, Jeff McGirr was appointed to complete the term of former District 3 commissioner Allen Greenfield before taking his elected position in January.

County auditor Jill Hanson was excited to report that each of the non-Arena polling precincts reported 100 percent accuracy between the book numbers at the precinct and the number of ballots that went through the machine.

At the Huron Arena, spoiled ballots were the reason that machine and book counts were off in precincts.

Hanson noted that the election saw 25 percent turnout between in-person and absentee voting, which is on par with usual municipal and school election turnout. Statewide, the turnout was higher with the adjusted voting date.

Hanson led the drawing for the upcoming election audit. Precinct seven (Wolsey area) will be spot-checked for the governor primary and the school board election on June 10.

McGirr won the election for the District 3 seat over Greenfield, who resigned his seat on the commission, effective May 1. The late resignation meant that Greenfield’s name was on the ballot, but McGirr won by a notable margin.

Commissioners also talked through plans for the upcoming July 28 runoff election for the gubernatorial primary between Toby Doeden and Larry Rhoden.

The regular meeting concluded and the commission closed with two executive sessions regarding personnel and negotiations.

The Beadle County Commission next meets on Tuesday, June 16, at 9 a.m.
