HURON — On Saturday Huron Middle School students Nick Freeman, Mason Davis, and Noah Beck competed in the Corn Palace Regional Spelling Bee in Mitchell.
They competed in a group of 18 students from regional middle schools in a bee that lasted 14 rounds. Beck placed third and Davis placed second behind Sam Pardy from O’Gorman, whose champion word was “susceptible.”

Other words spelled by Huron’s competitors included talc, layette, mediocre, insidious, and impasse.
Davis and Beck will both advance to the state level competition to be held at University of South Dakota in Vermillion on Saturday, March 17, with the possibility of advancing to the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., held May 28 to June 1.
