MITCHELL — The Huron Tigers couldn’t overcome cold shooting on the game and fell on the road to the Mitchell Kernels Saturday night, 60-52.
The Tigers were cold much of the first half, but hard-nosed play from Havyn Heinz, who scored eight in the half, and quality defense kept the game from getting out of hand.
Mitchell led by as many as seven, including at 27-20 in the second quarter, but Huron ended the half on a seven-point run keyed by five points off the bench from Reese Rozell. The game went to half tied at 27-27.
Tenley Buddenhagen keyed a big third quarter run for Huron to open the second half, eventually getting the Tigers to a four-point lead. Buddenhagen would end up scoring nine points in the quarter, but she was matched by Mitchell’s Macy Kempf, whose inside presence drew the Tigers defensive attention throughout the quarter, though it didn’t seem to slow her down.
The Kernels opened the fourth quarter with a 40-38 lead. They continued to pound inside if they could break the Tigers’ pressure defense, leading to foul trouble for multiple Tigers and prompting coach Buddenhagen to reach deeper into his bench than his typical rotation.
