National Night Out breaks down walls

HURON – Does tossing a pie in the face of a police officer sound like fun?
How about dropping a cop into the drink?
They are but two of the activities to be featured at the 34th annual National Night Out, set for 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Campbell Park.
Huron has been hosting a National Night Out event for the past half dozen years or so.
“We have a large group of participants – and everybody pretty much said they’re going to have different activities going on for the kids,” said Police Sgt. Mark Johnson, who organizes the campaign each year.
Citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses and local officials come together to send a message to criminal elements that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Last year across the country, Huron and more than 15,000 other communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada and military bases participated.
Just a few of the highlights this year: A fire safety trailer discussion at 5:30 p.m., entertainment by vocalist Alexis Urena of Huron at 6 p.m., a Zumba workout demonstration by representatives of the Nordby Center for Recreation at 6:30 p.m., a donut-eating contest at 7 p.m. and a K-9 presentation by Police Sgt. Derek Layher at 7:30 p.m.
Emergency response vehicles from Huron Ambu-lance, Huron Fire Depart-ment and the Highway Patrol will be in the park.
A Heartland Special Olympics fundraiser will feature the dunk tank. Johnson has been lining up a number of “victims” to dare folks to dip them into the water.
“We’re going to try and get as many law enforcement officers as we can,” he said.
The Center for Independence will have a scavenger hunt. The first 200 kids to show up will be able to get a free hotdog, courtesy of the Huron Fraternal Order of Police and Prostrollo General Motors.
At one booth, kids will be able to sign up for the local soccer and hockey programs.
As a new offering this year, a dispatcher with the Huron dispatch center has put together a “Do’s and Don’t’s” trivia contest involving when and when not to call the 911 emergency number.
There will be door prizes, with the grand prize winner getting the opportunity to toss a pie at a police officer.
“We always try to do something a little different, and try to get more people to come out and, hopefully, the weather cooperates,” Johnson said.
“We have a wide array of organizations from town that are going to come out and have different activities for everybody to participate in,” he said.
