Race of Champions 2022 qualifiers set at MCS

MILLER — Five drivers earned qualified to compete in the WISSOTA Race of Champions on Saturday night at Miller Central Speedway.

While there was several heated battles for top spot, the best was saved for last a three drivers battled for the lead during the duration of the 20-lap WISSOTA late model feature race.

David Carlson of Huron, who started on the pole, took the lead on the opening lap and held the point for much of the race. However, Aberdeen drivers Josh Skorczewski and Chade Becker were right on his heels, waiting to pounce if the opportunity presented itself.

Skorczewski, who moved past Justin Boomsma of Huron to take second on the second lap, struggled to figure out away around Carlson, who had his No. 73M late model glued to the bottom of the track. He managed to challenge for the lead on a couple occasions, but spent much of his time fighting off a strong challenge from Becker for the second spot.

Carlson led the first 19 laps, but as the trio headed into turn one of the final lap, Skorczewski went to the high side and was able to make it stick, overtaking Carlson as they came out of turn two. Skorczewski dove to the bottom of the track through turns three and four and collected his 14th feature in of his career at the Miller track.

Carlson would finish second, followed by Becker, Boomsma and Dustin Arthur of St. Lawrence.

Despite leading the final 10 laps of the 12-lap WISSOTA street stock, Maria Broksieck of Goodwin held off a strong challenge for Luke Johnson of Miller tu earn her second feature win at the speedway and first since July 19 of 2013.

Johnson led the first to laps from his pole starting position, but Broksieck, who started seventh in the 19-car field, was able to use the high side of the track to power to the front coming out of turn four on the third lap.

Broksieck was able to hold on to the top spot for the rest of the race, but Johnson didn’t make it an easy task. Johnson would finish second, followed by Warren Pourier Jr. of Kyle, James Hoing of Kimball and Matt Goth of Huron.

Although the Pump-N-Pak pure stocks weren’t racing for a spot in the Race of Champions field, the finish in the 10-lap main event rivaled any of those in the other five classes.

Cody Songer of Wolsey moved to the front from his starting spot on the outside of the first row on lap one. His trek to Victory Lane seemed to get a bit easier as top contenders Camden Rassel of Woonsocket and Wyatt Brooker of Tulare were forced to the back of the 8-car field for bring out consecutive caution flags before the second lap could be completed.

Songer would lead for the five laps before Mike Hammill of Miller, who was running second spun to bring out the third caution of the race with four laps remaining.

The restart allowed the field to bunch up on Songer’s bumper and provided Brooker with the opportunity he needed to atone for his earlier misfortune.

Brooker jumped to the high side of the track and drove pas the top three cars to take the lead. He then held off Jayden Michaelsohn of Aberdeen for his third feature win at the track.

Michaelsohn was second, followed by Hammill, who was able to work his way back to third and Andy Brooker. Songer finished fifth.

Mike Nichols of Watertown led from start to finish in the 15-lap WISSOTA Midwest modified feature race to earn his seventh win. He started on the inside of the second row and was able to grab the lead from polesitter Lane Johnson of Miller on the opening lap.

Johnson held the second spot for three laps before being overtaken by Adam Brotherton of Huron.

Brotherton would finished second the 20-car event, which went from start to finish without a caution.

Johnson finished third, followed by Tommy Nichols of Watertown and Dawson Zabel of Selby.

Dale Ames of Huron held off a strong challenge for Mike Stearns of Aberdeen to earn the win in the WISSOTA modified main event. It was the eighth win of his career at the track.

Stearns was second, followed by Brian Diede of Huron, who was making his first appearance of the season on Saturday night. Rounding out the top five were Jesse Young of Warner and Zach Jung of Aberdeen.

Trevor Nelson of Warner continued his winning ways on Saturday in the WISSOTA super stock division. He started fifth in the 12-car field and worked his way to the front during the opening lap.

Nelson pulled away to collect the 21st win of his career at Miller Central Speedway.

Blake Whitlock of Watertown was second, followed by Austin Arbogast of Huron, Nathan Grehl of Hitchcock and Dominique Menzia of Aberdeen.

The five WISSOTA winners from Saturday will compete their division’s Race of Champions during the 2022 WISSOTA 100 in Fergus Falls, Minn.

Racing returns to Miller Central Speedway on Saturday with all six classes back in action. Racing begins at 7 p.m.
