Sanborn Central students win business contest

Take first place in 28th annual Business Plan Competition

Posted

PIERRE — Austin Schmit and Alex Wormstadt, Sanborn Central High School students, won first-prize in the recent 28th Annual Business Plan Competition for high school students.
The competition is co-sponsored by the South Dakota Bankers Foundation and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. The concept behind the Business Plan Competition is to take an idea for a business that could be started by a student and transfer it into a business plan.

The finalists, parents and advisors were invited to attend the South Dakota Bankers Association’s annual legislative reception on Feb. 7 to receive awards from Lt. Governor Matt Michels in recognition of their entrepreneurial efforts.
First-place winners Schmit and Wormstadt submitted a plan to produce “Double A Calf Boxes” for farmers who calve during the cold months of the year. These units will be mobile, heated boxes designed to keep newborn calves warm and dry, subsequently increasing their chance for survival. For their efforts, Austin and Alex received $1,500.
