HURON — The Huron School Board held their first meeting of July Monday evening at the instructional planning center at the Huron Arena.
The board approved the consent agenda in one motion, which included three new hires to the Huron School District, five resignations, and a request to hold the School Surplus Property Auction at the Transport Building this July. Also approved were two grant funding application requests by Rita Baszler for “Fuel Up To Play 60” for both Washington Elementary and Madison Elementary.
Superintendent Terry Nebelsick extended congratulations to Trent Francom, the AA State Boys Pole Vault Champion who was named AA Field Athlete of the Meet at the State Meet held at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, and to Jayda Shillingstad, who finished in 15th place at the State Golf Meet. Nebelsick also gave thanks to the administrators and staff for their efforts and organization of the Huron School District year-end events.

“There are awards programs and activities awards given throughout the district that take a lot of hours with the administrators and their assistants that go into making those a success and making them meaningful for students, and I am grateful for all of those,” Nebelsick said.
The superintendent’s report highlighted the importance of enrollment, the budget is based on enrollment numbers and Nebelsick noted that it is being kept track of.
Also discussed was the staff development training to take place this summer with Chris Webber, who will be here for two weeks working with the middle school, elementary school, high school, and the administrative team, where all the work will be pulled together on the last Friday in July.
“What that is all about is figuring out the unique modifications we need to make with disconnected learners to keep them focused on the task of getting to graduation, reports will be coming to you on that work in the coming months,” Nebelsick explains.
The annual school budget hearing has been postponed until the following School Board meeting which will take place on Monday, June 26, at the Huron Event Center.
The goals report work session took place at 6:30 p.m. after the board meeting was held.
