HURON — The first action taken during the Huron City Commission meeting Monday evening was to approve the canvass of the April 11 election for a commission seat. Shawn Harvey received 555 votes while Ashley Kingdon-Reese received 380 votes. The total of 935 votes represented a 13% turnout, according to Financial Director Paullyn Carey.
The canvass was approved. Harvey will be sworn in on May 1.
During public forum, Mayor Gary Harrington recognized the Huron Regional Airport and airport manager Larry Cooper for receiving the 2022 Airport of the Year - Large Ground division at the S.D. Office of Aeronautics awards. He presented Cooper with a plaque and noted that Cooper has worked for nearly 32 years with the airport, allowing the airport to have the success that it does.
The commission approved going to bid on the Huron parking ramp removal and new parking lot construction project at the Huron Event Center/Crossroads. The bids will be opened May 9 at 2 p.m.
City planner Barry Cranston presented a plat in the joint jurisdictional area filed by Connie Earley and B. Jean & Ervin Eckmann. The city engineering department made suggestions regarding the storm sewer and right of way, and the plat was approved with these suggestions.
