School Board holds brief meeting

Posted

HURON — The Huron School Board met for its regular bi-weekly meeting Monday night, with a brief agenda that the board moved through quickly.

Prior to the actual start of the meeting, board president Tim Van Berkum introduced Huron High School students Tiegen Peterson and Lily Halter as the new student representatives for the school board.

The students, who are not voting members, will alternate in attendance at, and participation in, school board meetings.

Business Manager Kelly Christopherson updated the board on the construction project at Huron High School. Christopherson noted that he is finalizing some details with the contractor and there is a plan to meet with the construction manager when the details are hammered out.

Board member Garret Bischoff asked Christopherson if plans will be made to issue capital outlay bonds soon. Christopherson said that the board will make a decision on any bond issuance, after the final plans are made and he can determine how the project cost fins with the general fund.

Superintendent Dr. Kraig Steinhoff congratulated HHS Librarian Rachel Kary for receiving one of only 11 “Exemplary” awards in the state for 2024-27 21st Century School Library Award.

The board sought to select a delegate to the Associated School Boards of South Dakota assembly in November, and while some thought they may be free to go, all asked to check calendars before committing. At the suggestion of Bischoff, the ASBSD president for the year, Craig Lee was appointed as delegate, with Shelly Siemonsma as alternate.

An introduction to Bus Conduct Consequences was made, with a first reading set for the next board meeting.

In other business, the board:
• Approved a request from Christopherson to file a tax request with the county, so the school district may receive the tax funds that are levied as being for the school district.

• Approved the five new hires, two resignations, one new contract and 10 contract revisions.
• Approved one open enrollment request.

The next school board meeting is at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23, in the IPC on the second floor of Huron Arena.
