County five-year bridge plan presented to commission

Posted

HURON – Beadle County highway superintendent Jason Fritzsche presented the county’s five-year bridge plan to the Beadle County Commission and gathered representatives from townships at Tuesday morning’s meeting.

Fritzsche noted that ten bridges were replaced this year, seven of them through federal programs. However, the success of getting multiple bridges into state and federal bridge programs has the downside that overall bridge scores in the county have now improved such that getting funding is more difficult, according to Fritzsche.

That does not mean that no bridge work will be done, but it does mean that the county will need to be intentional about its spending on bridge projects without the funding through federal and state programs potentially offsetting the cost for bridge replacement and improvement.

The commission also held a public hearing on the provisional budget. There were no public objections to the provisional budget.

David Jensen brought a purchase request to the commission to purchase a used pickup for the Emergency Management department and the Weed & Pest Department. This was approved.

The commission will next meet on Tuesday, September 24, at 9 a.m. in the commission room on the second floor of the courthouse.
