HURON — Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) Foundation announces the recipients of ten health care commitment scholarships totaling $85,000 according to Levi Kary, executive director.

“We’re excited  to offer these commitment scholarships to support area students who are pursuing degrees in high-need health careers and plan to return to work in Huron,” said Kary. “This financial support helps to ensure the outlook for local, high-quality health care professionals to care for our community into the future is strong.”

2024 HRMC Foundation Commitment Scholarship recipients:
• Kennadie Ochsner – who is pursuing a degree in Licensed Practical Nursing from Mitchell Technical College.
• Shealay Smith – who is pursuing a degree in Licensed Practical Nursing from Lake Area Technical College.
• Whitney Haake – who pursing a degree in Registered Nursing from Southeast Technical College at Huron Community Campus.

Scholarship amounts are dependent on the program of study. Those attending qualified technical school programs are eligible to receive Build Dakota funds, in addition to the HRMC Foundation scholarship — which often makes the total support equivalent to a full-ride scholarship. After graduation these students commit to returning to Huron to work in a community medical facility for a set period of time.

“There are currently over 30 health care professionals working at HRMC and other health care facilities in the community that were Healthy Huron Commitment Scholarship Recipients,” said Kary.  “Through the generosity of our donors, this program has made a significant difference in the quality of health care in Huron now and well into the future.”

In addition to these scholarships, the board also awarded 13 Interest scholarships to students from the region who have an interest in a health care career but are not ready to make a commitment to return here and work. These recipients will be announced in the future.
