Sioux Falls 1 claims Pee Wee A state title

HURON – The Sioux Falls Flyers 1 team closed out a weekend of exciting hockey at Bergman Arena in Huron with a dominant championship game performance, defeating the Brookings Rangers 4-2 to claim the title in the State Pee Wee A Hockey Tournament.

The game was scoreless for the first 8:45 until Braden Laber pushed a goal across for the Flyers off assists by Hudson DeMore and Jett Howe.

Despite a 10-3 edge in shots on goal, that was the only Flyers score in the first period.

The second period would see the two teams have nearly the same shots on goal, with Sioux Falls putting eight on goal and Brookings seven.

At the 8:29 mark, Caden Herman took a Laber assist and found the back of the net to give Sioux Falls a 2-0 lead.
Laber took a Herman pass 24 seconds later to make it 3-0 in favor of Sioux Falls.

The Ranger offense struggled to find the mark, missing on six shots over the final six minutes of the second period and missed five shots in the first four minutes of the third period.

Laber completed the championship game hat trick at the 4:36 mark in the third off assists from Tanner Charron and Traedyn Webb to give the Flyers a 4-0 advantage.

Brookings got on the board at the 10-minute mark as Carter Nielsen scored unassisted. The Rangers unleashed a host of shots at the 12-minute mark, finally connecting as Colt Vanmaanen scored at the 12:26 mark off assists by Atwood Ahmann and Colin Jacobson to make it 4-2.

However, that was the last shot that Brookings would get off as the Flyers’ defense clamped down over the final two and a half minutes to secure the championship.

After a 12-5 edge on shots on goal in the final period, Brookings nearly evened the mark for the game, with Sioux Falls holding the edge 23-22 as part of the 4-2 victory.

Third place - Sioux Falls 2 4, Huron 2
The Huron All-Stars had the score knotted after two periods against the Sioux Falls Flyers 2 team, but Sioux Falls pulled out two third period goals to take a 4-2 victory Sunday in the third place game.

Bronson Everson opened scoring in the game with a power play goal for the Flyers with 11:13 remaining in the first period on an assist from Bodin Wachal. Huron got on the board at the 5:54 mark of the first behind a goal from Quincy Rashaad to even the score at 1-1.

The All-Stars took the lead with 8:06 remaining in the second period on an unassisted goal by Crosby Hartman.

Roughly 90 seconds later, the Flyers tied things back up on a goal by Declyn McGary off assists by Wachal and Jacob Dunn.

The Flyers defense held Huron at bay in the third, allowing just two shots on goal, while Sioux Falls was able to send 10 toward the net, with Everson getting the puck across the crease at the 10:37 mark on an assist by McGary. Wachal would light the lamp with 1:25 left, assisted by McGary to give the Flyers the 4-2 victory.

Griffin Heeney stopped 20 shots on the day for the Flyers while Jace Gerber turned away 18 of 22 attempts for the All-Stars.

Fifth - Rushmore 9, Aberdeen 7
The Rushmore Thunder jumped out to a 5-1 first period lead and then held off a furious comeback attempt by the Aberdeen Cougars to claim fifth place in the State Pee Wee A Hockey Tournament Sunday at Bergman Arena.

Rushmore opened the scoring just 20 seconds into the game on a Kai Turek goal, assisted by Jaxson Reeder and Broddic Williams. Two minutes later, Reeder would take a pass from Lucas Minnerath and find the back of the net to give Rushmore a 2-0 lead.

Nicholas Woods scored off an assist by Bryson Elias to give Rushmore a 3-0 lead before Paxton Dallman found the back of the net for Aberdeen off an assist by Cody Meyer to put the Cougars on the board.

A flurry of shots would produce two final goals in the first period for Rushmore as Williams scored at the 11:12 mark on assists by Turek and Minnerath and Minnerath would score two minutes later unassisted to close out the first with the Thunder ahead 5-1.

Minnerath would score unassisted at the 6:38 point of the second for Rushmore, but Meyer scored for Aberdeen 20 seconds later on an assist by Landon Schmit.

Meyer scored his second goal in a minute at the 7:34 mark and teammate Ayden Loebs also went in unassisted 30 seconds later to make the score 6-4 Thunder.

Minnerath got the hat trick on an unassisted goal at the 12:09 mark of the second to push Rushmore’s lead to 7-4.

Dallman took an assist from Mason Dutenhoeffer and scored at the very end of the second period to bring Aberdeen within 7-5.

Dallman got his own hat trick off an assist by Schmit, bringing Aberdeen within one at 7-6 at 4:10 in the third period.

Rushmore responded two minutes later as Woods took an assist from Brady Cathcart and scored at the 6:15 mark, then 15 seconds later, Reeder lit the lamp off an assist by Minnerath to push the Rushmore lead to 9-6.

Dallman would score an unassisted goal at 10:37 for Aberdeen, but Rushmore was able to control the puck much of the rest of the way to close out the 9-7 win.

Seventh - Sioux Center 9, Watertown 6
The Sioux Center Tornadoes jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 9-6 win over the Watertown Lakers to claim seventh place in the State Pee Wee A Hockey Tournament Sunday at Bergman Arena.

Marshall Sievers opened the scoring with a goal at the 3:46 mark in the first for Sioux Center off passes from Braden Metselaar and Carson Mosterd.

Watertown would even things at 1-1 behind a power play goal by Jack Sutten at the 4:47 mark off an assist from Conner Dahl.

Ten seconds later, the Tornadoes spun another goal to re-take the lead as Conner Van Orden scored off assists by Matthias Baart and Royce McCord. Sievers would score off an assist by Wyatt Majerus to give Sioux Center a 3-1 lead at the 6:50 mark.

Maddix Hunke lit the lamp with an unassisted goal at the 7:34 mark of the first for Watertown, and Christopher McCormick took a pass from Lucas Meester and scored 12 seconds later to knot the game at three.

Sievers completed the first period hat trick with a goal at the 8:50 mark off an assist from Metselaar.

Watertown would tie the score at four behind a Boston Butler unassisted goal 1:19 into the second period.

Sievers would score an unassisted power play goal for Sioux Center at the 2:14 point of the second period and Baart would score 17 seconds later off assists by Mosterd and McCord to give the Tornadoes a 6-4 lead.

Mosterd found the back of the net at 6:11 in the second off an assist from Baart to make it 7-4 Sioux Center before Butler scored off assists by Dahl and Meester for Watertown to get the score within two at 7-5.

Van Orden scored at the 10:12 mark off assists by Mosterd and Brooklyn Byl and Baart scored at the 12:09 point using assists by Mosterd and Van Orden to give Sioux City a 9-5 lead heading into the final period.

The Watertown offense was fast and furious in its shooting in the final period, but it could not overcome the edge.

Jett Engen scored at the 2:42 mark off assists by Meester and Maddix Hunke, but none of the other 13 Laker shots in the period found their mark, giving Sioux Center the 9-6 victory.

Saturday Semifinals

Brookings 5, Sioux Falls 2 1
The Brookings Rangers were able to play strong defense to earn a championship berth behind a 5-1 victory over the Sioux Falls Flyers 2 squad Saturday at Bergman Arena.

Colt Vanmaanen got the Rangers on the board at the 7:38 mark of the first with a power play goal, assisted by Ethan Foerster. Carter Nielsen would add an unassisted goal for Brookings at the 12:12 mark to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Jacob Dunn scored a power play goal for the Flyers at the 2:31 mark of the second period to cut the lead in half off assists by Bronson Everson and William Jones.

Foerster pushed across a goal at the 8:21 mark of the second off an assist by Jack Lovseth to make it 3-1 Brookings headed into the final frame.

Foerster took an assist from Tegan Jensen and scored at the 6:35 point of the third, and Lovseth scored unassisted at the 9:36 mark in the period to finalize a 5-1 victory for the Rangers.

Sioux Falls 1 8, Huron 1
The Huron All-Stars were beset by a barrage of Sioux Falls Flyers 1 shot attempts and simply could not overcome the onslaught, falling 8-1 in the semifinal game Saturday at Bergman Arena in the State Pee Wee A Tournament.

Tanner Charron put the Flyers up 40 seconds into the game off assists from Caden Herman and Traedyn Webb.

Brayden Laber would put in an unassisted goal at the 11:53 mark to give Sioux Falls a 2-0 lead off a 10-2 shot advantage over Huron.

Charron would score a power play goal 31 seconds into the second period off assists from Herman and Hudson DeMore. Herman would score his first goal, unassisted, at the 5:10 mark in the second.

Riar Eining tickled the net at the 7:16 mark of the second off an assist from Webb for Sioux Falls and Henrik Kortan scored 11 seconds later off an assist from Ryleigh Tarrell to make it 6-0.

Crostby Hartman scored an unassisted goal for the All-Stars at the 13:22 mark of the second, but Huron would finish the period being outshot 23-6 in the game by Sioux Falls.

The Sioux Falls defense would only allow one shot for Huron in the final frame while Herman putshed across a goal just 26 seconds into the third on an assist from Laber. Kortan scored the Flyers’ final goal on a power play shot at the 12:37 mark off an assist from Owen Berg.

For the game, the Flyers outshot the All-Stars 37-7 to move into the championship game.

Consolation semifinals
Aberdeen 8, Watertown 0
The Aberdeen Cougars bounced back from a first-round loss to shut out the Watertown Lakers 8-0 Saturday in consolation action at Bergman Arena.

Paxton Dallman opened the game with a goal just 23 seconds into the game for Aberdeen. Dallman would net his second goal at the 12:28 mark of the first period and record the hat trick on a goal at the 13:20 mark on an assist by Landon Schmit.

Schmit would find the back of the net at the 3:05 mark of the second period off an assist by Collin Oswald to give Aberdeen a 4-0 lead. Dallman then added a short-handed goal at the 10:58 mark for Aberdeen.

Ayden Loebs scored in the third at the 10:38 mark off an assist by Coen Vilhauer, and Schmit pushed a goal across unassisted nine seconds later. Cody Meyer would finish out the scoring on an assist by Schmit at the 11:20 mark to give Aberdeen the 8-0 victory and send the Cougars into the consolation championship.

Rushmore 8, Sioux Center 1
The Rushmore Thunder netted four goals in the first period Saturday and never looked back, coming away with an 8-1 victory over the Sioux Center Tornadoes at Bergman Arena in State Pee Wee A Tournament action.

Brody Cathcart got Rushmore started quickly with a goal just 19 seconds into the game off an assist by Broddic Williams.

Cayden Brozik then opened a flurry of scoring by the Thunder with a goal at the 13:26 mark off an assist by Nicholas Woods. Williams scored 15 seconds later off assists by Cathcart and Kai Turek. Turek lit the lamp thirty seconds after Williams on a shot that was assisted by Cathcart and Lucas Minnerath to give Rushmore a 4-0 lead after one.

Turek pushed across his second goal at the 1:45 mark of the second on assists by Cathcart and Jaxson Reeder.

The Tornadoes would then get on the board with a goal by Matthias Bart off an assist from Marshall Sievers at the 5:25 mark.

Rushmore would quickly respond, with Woods finding the back of the net at the 6:55 mark off assists by Jack Archer and Bryson Elias. Reeder scored a power play goal for the Thunder at the 9:40 mark off assists by Williams and Cathcart to make it 7-1.

Turek would cap the hat trick with a goal at 11:39 in the third off an assist from Cathcart to give Rushmore the 8-1 final and send the Thunder into the consolation championship matchup against Aberdeen.
