SIOUX FALLS The Huron Tigers girls finished the game strong, but it was too little, too late, as the No. 3 Sioux Falls Washington Warriors defeated the Tigers 53-42 Thursday in Sioux Falls.
The home club used their height to jump out early, as Dana Harpe got a putback to open scoring, and Tierney Schramm cut through the lane for another bucket. After Abby Harrington hit a jumper in the lane for Huron, the Warriors would go on a 9-0 run.
The Tigers finally broke through the Warrior press and Chloe Carr got a left-handed baby hook end the Washington run.
Josie Biteler would get fouled in the lane and hit one of two before Hylton Heinz banked in a three for Huron to bring the final tally after one quarter to 14-7 in favor of Washington.
Allison Janes made a strong move to the hoop to open the second quarter and hit a pair of free throws. Harpe would get one of two free throws and Biteler would get a steal and a layup to make it 17-9, but Huron then went on an 8-3 run, keyed by a Janes deep ball from the top of the key. After Aly Davis hit one of two free throws, the Tigers were within 20-17.
Thats when Grace Peterson took over. She would score nine points as Washington closed out the second quarter on an 11-1 run as the Warriors took a 31-18 lead into the break.
The Tiger defense played well, according to Huron coach Kody Kopfmann, but the offense has to finish with a shot.
That was what we talked about pregame – we needed 50 shots. We only got 39 on the game, Kopfmann observed. We got in a hurry in our halfcourt set and thats where we made mistakes.
The Warriors jumped out with the first five points of the second half before an Aly Davis free throw and a drive into the heart of the defense by Heinz quickly got Huron three points.
Harpe attacked the glass hard, something she would do throughout the second half, getting a hoop and foul to make it 39-21. Harrington would nail a three and Jencie Goergen came off the bench to hit a three to make it 41-27, but a pair of free throws from Rylan Kennett and two charity shots from Harpe closed out the third period with Washington up 45-27.
Freshman Jersey Peterson got a bucket to open the fourth period for Washington. Hurons Chloe Carr hit a corner three, but Grace Peterson answered with a three of her own.
Goergen hit a jumper, but Harpe responded with a putback that she was fouled on. After converting the free throw, the Warriors matched their largest lead at 53-32.
Huron would close out the final three minutes on a 10-0 run, but the Tigers simply couldnt get enough shots up against the longer Warrior defense, and Washington came away with a 53-42 win.
The Warriors move to 6-0 with Grace Peterson putting in 16 and Harpe adding 15.
Heinz was the only Huron scorer in double figures with 10 points. Goergen added eight and Carr put in seven.
The Washington girls took the JV game, 59-31. The Sophomore game went to Huron by the score of 53-10.
Huron coach Kopfmann was pleased with how his club fought to the end, and he hopes to use an extended break to build on that progress.
We cant get down on ourselves when we miss shots, he said. We need the girls to have confidence stepping into the next one, and thats what we did well in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers are off until Saturday, Jan. 11, when they host Harrisburg.
