HURON Conflict disclosure and consideration of waivers were discussed at Mondays Huron School Board meeting. The board will review the diclosures and determine if the transactions or the terms of the contracts are fair, reasonable, and not contrary to the public interest. This will be discussed further at Septembers meeting.
Supt. Kraig Steinhoff gave his report, stating, I will collaborate with Principal Mittelstedt to secure two student representatives for the Board of Education.
There will be one junior and one senior. They are nonvoting members and will take turns attending the meetings due to seating limitations. Their primary responsibilities will remain the same – leading the Pledge of Allegiance, introducing students, giving good news reports, and adding to discussions when invited by the Board President.
Steinhoff announced that the district will be partnering with Lets Go Learn on behavior intervention and a precision data-driven approach to support positive behavior for all students.
Weve talked for several years about the need for a district wide system to provide support, planning and follow up for student behaviors that make the learning environent challenging for the student with the behavior and their peers. Steinhoff stated.
Lets Go Learn was in Huron for their initial training of the instructional staff last week. They provided two days of training for the District Behavior Problem Solving Team. Members of this team included the Special Education Director, Behavior Specialists, Building Level Behavior Interventionist, and an Occupational Therapist Assistant. The next training is scheduled for September 9-10, and will include the same District Behavior Problem Solving Team in addition to the school’s Behavior Problem Solving Teams.
The school teams will include building level behavior interventionist, building principal, counselor, regular education teacher, special education teacher and occupational therapist assistant. The trainings will continue throughout this school year.
Our end goal is a behavior system that relies on data rather than opinion or emotions to create a supportive and fair environment for students, said Steinhoff.
In July, the board approved partnering with Tom Oster and Dakota Education Consulting to survey students, families, and staff to guide the updates to their strategic plan.
Tom has shared the draft surveys with me for review, stated Steinhoff.
Steinhoff will send the draft surveys to the full administrative team to review and make recommended changes before sending them out, hoping to get surveys out in October.
Congradulations were extended to the students and staff for successfully navigating the first days of the new school year, to Derek and Mu La Shaefers on the birth of their daughter August 6, and to Kristi and Linc Kattner on their daughter Jamee Kattners Miss South Dakota title. Jamee is a 2021 HHS graduate.
Steinhoff also gave thank you shout outs to the physical therapists in observance of Physical Therapists Day on September 8, Scooters Coffee for providing drink coupons to the staff, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources for donating South Dakota State Fair gate admission passes for all current fourth and fifth graders.
The students were recognized for their participation in the SD State Fair Read and Win Program, explained Steinhoff.
He continued to thank the Huron Area Credit Union for classroom supplies, sweets for in-service and four $25 prizes, Matt and Debbie Busch for providing donuts at the in-service, Heather and Ryan Goehner for school supplies and personal products for the High School, Farmers and Merchants Bank for the delicious donuts for back to school, and Heather Koapke for the donation of 24 boxes of each of crayons, colored pencils, and markers to Washington 4-5 Center.
The board approved 5 new hires to the district and two resignations.
