HURON The Huron School Board meeting on Monday, Sept. 8, was called to order at 5:30 p.m. Board members Garret Bischoff and Shelly Simmons were present via phone.
After the board adopted the agenda and added two resignations, Tim Van Berkum started with dates to remember, including Arts in Education Week from Sept. 14-20. September 22 is the next School Board meeting and also high school parent-teacher virtual conferences. September 23 is coronation following the varsity volleyball game, and September 26 is the homecoming parade along with early release. September 29-30 is Washington 4-5 Center parent and teacher conferences from 3:30 to 6:45 p.m. There was no community input or conflict disclosure or consideration of waivers.
Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff requested for the board to approve the consent agenda. The board approved the minutes from the previous meetings, the financial report, and the consideration of the bills. There were 16 new hires approved to be covered by their workmens compensation plan, which includes Aspen White, Jacelyn Bankston, Kristina Doll, Sheya Treglia, Chantal Sicot, Lisa Van Dyke, Beverly Dunn, Susan Kaw, and Bryli Hickey as substitute teachers for $160 per day/substitute para-educators at $21.83 per hour. Huyen Nguyen was hired for an on-call interpreter with a pay rate of $27.96 per hour. Eduardo Trujillo Cordove was hired as a volunteer coach for boys soccer. Dustin Wagner was approved for the activities office intern, and Hannah Dickson for speech language pathologist intern. Georgi Lackey was hired as a SPED para-educator at McKinley/Colonies at $22.84 per hour, and Cody Rogers was hired as an assistant baker at the middle school at $22.17 per hour. Linda Halters resignation was approved; she is a teacher at Washington 4-5 Center with 18 years of service. Her resignation will be effective at the end of the school year. Susan Kaws resignation was also approved. She was with the food service and dish room assistant at the middle school and has 1 year of service.
The board also approved 3 contract revisions.
The Plainsman was designated as the official newspaper for the Huron School District.
Supt. Kraig Stienhoff congratulated Brittany, a teacher at the middle school, and Ian McClanahan on the birth of their son, Colson, born August 23. He also congratulated Lexi, a teacher at Washington 4-5 Center, and Houstyn Heinz on the birth of their daughter, Niklin, born September 2.
Stienhoff extended thanks to the Sandborn County Journal and their staff for publicizing the Huron School District information during the time the Plainsman was unavailable, Key Club members and high school students for taking time out of their holiday weekend to volunteer at the Kiwanis Pancake House at the State Fair, Wipf Construction for the load of dirt for the CTE greenhouse, and American Family Insurance and the Salvation Army for their donation of school supplies.
Stienhoff also thanked the South Dakota State Fair staff for partnering with Huron High School in their service learning initiative, and thank you to the staff at Huron High School for making their day of service learning a reality. And thank you to the Scoreboard Bar & Grill for donating birthday treats, ensuring students who dont receive any from home are still able to celebrate and share with their classmates. He also thanked the staff teaching the arts, stating, arts education is a board that encompasses all different ways that students engage in the arts, including but not limited to painting, drawing, sculpture, music, dance, and theater.
Last, Stienhoff thanked Technology Director Roger Ahlers and the Technology Staff in observance of IT Professionals Day on September 16.
I am looking forward to tonights Board Goals Work Session, where the full administrative team will highlight their goals for the school year that are connected to our strategic plan, Stienhoff said. We have a busy year planned with strategic planning review, training on our K-12 behavior system, RDA, training on the I Love You Guys reunification protocol, CSTAG, and our Board Goals.
Business Manager Kelly Christopherson reported on school construction.
The High School edition, since last month, has progressed with paint, ceilings, caulking, siding, and site work around the new addition, he explained. The new scoreboards are complete and in use.
The board approved the HSD Procurement Plan for child nutrition programs, and the policy CDB organization chart with no changes since first reading.
The board also approved the sports medicine and physical therapy contract with HRMC, with the increased rate from $40 to $45 per hour.
There was a brief intermission before the board goals work session began.
