HURON Doris C. Kuhns, age 96, of Huron, passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at Peaceful Pines Assisted Living in Huron. Her memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, September 30, at First Baptist Church in Huron, with burial following at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Doris Claire Verch was born on November 30, 1928 in Cavour, to parents Paul and Bessie (Redman) Verch. She grew up in Cavour, graduating from Cavour High School.
Doris lived a full and spirited life, marked by resilience, generosity, and a green thumb that could coax beauty from even the most stubborn patch of dirt. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend and, over the years, the loving partner to four husbands: Melburn Cook, Gordon Wahus, Leland Skow, and Bud Kuhns, all of whom she outlived with grace and strength.
Doris worked at HeadStart Preschool, first as a cook and later as a teacher, where she helped nurture the minds and hearts of countless children. Her compassion also extended into her own home, as she served for many years as a foster parent, providing love, safety, and guidance to several children who will forever carry her kindness in their hearts.
When she wasnt tending to her flower gardens, Doris could be found volunteering at First Baptist Church, laughing with friends, or passing down her gardening wisdom to her family. Her home and heart were always open, and her kitchen table was never without fresh blooms from her own yard.
She is survived by her children and grandchildren, daughter Valerie Camp of Cheyenne, Wyo., and her children Logan Camp and Jamin Camp, son Lowell Cook of Vermillion, and his children, Jocelyn Schwab and Melissa Mikkelson, and son Stuart (Cindy) Cook of Lees Summit, Mo., and his children, Russell, Tyler, Austin Cook and step-sons Zach and Nick Doty; 9 great-grandchildren; her brother, Darold (Kathy) Verch of Calif., and her sister Charmaine Maass of Rapid City.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; three sisters; two children, Tom (Bridget) Cook and Melissa Cook; and two grandchildren, Sara Jo Cook and Gennifer Cook.
Her loved ones take comfort in knowing she is reunited with the many dear ones who went before her and that somewhere in heaven, shes already planting the perfect flower garden.
