Latino Voices of Huron looks to future gatherings

HURON Latino Voices of Huron held three festival events at Campbell Park on Saturdays from 1 – 7 p.m., September 13, October 4, and October 18. Latino Festivals are events full of music, dance, food, and culture that bring the whole community together in one place.

Every date, the festival has grown, said Maria Teresa, The first one was about showing people that we could do it. The second we had more participation, countries represented, and better organization, and this third one was about connection, uniting families, local businesses, and cultures in one big celebration of diversity.

The event welcomed a widevariety of local vendors such as HR Home cooking, Flavors of Guatemala, Mikhuy Comida Pervana, Boricua Flavor, Andrea y Jairo Sabor Latino, Lake Kaz de Ana, Tacos y Quesadillas, Cake My Day, Las Pupusas De Morena, Sabor Boricua, and Walking Tacos Express. There were also non-food vendors, including Girls Boutique, Deisy Tupperware, Lilac 17 LLC, along with raffles, games, and prizes.

Maria Teresa has been wanting to bring Latino Festivals to the Huron community since her move back after living a few months in Florida.

I saw how the Latino community there supported each other and contributed so much to the local culture and economy, she explained. I wanted to bring that same energy here, and to show that Latinos are not only hardworking but also joyful, colorful, and full of life.

She continued, Through our food, music, and dance, we enrich the whole community.

The festival is a team effort, and belongs to everyone who works hard to make it happen.

For now, it is community-based but one of Teresas goals is to become a non-profit organization so they can receive more support, apply for grants, and continue growing into a beautiful tradition for years to come.

My goal is to unite people through culture, to build bridges between the Latino community and the rest of Huron, said Teresa. I want our children to feel proud of their roots and for everyone to see that diversity is something to celebrate.

Latino Voices of Huron plans to continue hosting these festivals again next summer and will possibly host a few indoor events over the winter months.

These events are about love, family, and community.
