Each year the Beadle County 4-H Council awards the Heartland Saddle to deserving South Dakota person or persons.
This year the award goes to Treg and Renee Cowan of Highmore. They live on a ranch southwest of Highmore. Renee is also a registered nurse. Their daughter, Sydney, works for Junior Achievement of South Dakota in Sioux Falls and son, Tevin, is on the Mens Rodeo Team at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Okla.
Being involved with youth, especially in the horse and rodeo arenas, has always been a part of their lives. Some of Tregs titles have included President of the Highmore 4-H Rodeo Committee, President of the South Dakota 4-H Rodeo Finals Lay Board, and has been on the Host committee of the Highmore River Region rodeo. He has been involved in South Dakota High School Rodeo as the River Region Director and has served as President and Vice President of the 4-H Finals Committee. He can be found volunteering in the rodeo office, pushing roping calves, pulling timed event barriers, opening the gates for the rough stock events or even driving the ambulance if need be. Wherever there is a need, Treg is there to lend a helping hand.
Helping their community is also top on their list. Whether it is helping round up freshly weaned calves in the middle of the night, helping with farm work for ill neighbors, or delivering generators during extended power outages, they are quick to volunteer their help. Treg and Renee can also be seen in the bleachers supporting the local sports teams, fighting fires and helping out when and where they are needed.
Please join the Beadle County 4-H Council in recognizing Treg and Renee Cowan with the Heartland Saddle Award.
