SIOUX FALLS –– The Huron Tigers jumped out early and held serve in a defensive battle Tuesday to come away with a 48-38 victory over the Sioux Falls Rough Riders in Sioux Falls.
The Tigers held on for a 16-14 lead after the first quarter, battling against the strength of Roosevelt 6-foot-3 sophomore post Kalli Harris, who had eight of the Rough Riders’ 14 points in the first quarter.
The Tigers would hold Harris to one field goal the rest of the game, and the stingy defense also did not allow the offense to get set to allow sharpshooter Henlee Loof a clean look.
The Tiger lead was 33-21 at the end of the first half.
Huron’s offense struggled to make field goals in the second half, but attacking the Roosevelt defense into the lane led to foul trouble for multiple Rough Rider ballhandlers and 15 free throw attempts in the second half for the Tigers.
The two teams combined for just 32 points in the second half as Huron finished off a 48-38 win.
The Tigers move to 6-7, behind 23 points from Hylton Heinz.
Aly Davis had seven points, while Addyson Knight and Abagail Harrington each added five points.
Roosevelt falls to 2-11. Harris led the Rough Riders with 15 points.
Huron swept lower-level action, winning the junior varsity game, 36-27, and taking the sophomore game, 60-32.
