50s and 60s rock and roll… the way it was meant to be
Get ready for a high-energy show on Sunday, May 3, when Richie Lee and the Fabulous ’50s take over the De Smet Event Center stage, bringing audiences back to the roots of rock ’n’ roll history. The music will sound just as it did in the good old days, featuring hits made famous by original stars like Buddy Holly. Beginning at 3 p.m., this concert marks the second performance of the 2026 De Smet Concert Series.
Hailing from Des Moines, Iowa, Richie Lee is well known for his exceptional voice, perfectly suited to the sound of the 1950s. In addition to his vocal talent, he is an accomplished guitarist. Richie began performing at a young age and has had the great opportunity in sharing the stage and opening for many of the original rock ’n’ roll greats. In addition to Buddy Holly, audiences will hear music from Ritchie Valens, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Roy Orbison, Eddie Cochran, The Beatles, and many more.
Richie’s passion for this era of music began when he first heard Buddy Holly. “It was like his music stood out more than anyone else’s on the radio,” Richie says. He remains committed to ensuring Holly’s music does “not fade away.”
Rita Anderson, co-chairman of the De Smet Arts Council, shared her enthusiasm, “We have found that the music of the ’50s and ’60s has proven to be one of the most popular among the many diverse musical genres we’ve presented over our 11 years of concerts since the Event Center was constructed. We are very excited to have Richie Lee and his band performing here, as his voice and the group’s high-energy performance are among the best at capturing that original rock and roll sound.”
