Post 7 splits final two games in Rapid City

RAPID CITY After picking up their first win of the season on Thursday at the Veterans Classic tournament in Rapid City, Huron Post 7 finished out the tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturdays contest was a close loss to tourney co-host Post 320 of Rapid City.

Post 320 jumped out early, with a run in the first and three runs in the second to take a 4-1 lead. Huron got within 4-3 in the top of the third, but then both teams put up zeroes the rest of the way, with the Tigers grounding into a game-ending double play with two runners on base in the final inning.

Jack Pedersen tossed a strong game on the mound, going all six innings for Post 7, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out three.

Bubba Peterson led the Huron offense with a triple, a single, and a hit-by-pitch. He also swiped a pair of bases. Logan Leyendecker was hit by pitch and had a walk while also stealing two bases.

Trace Wenz had a single and a walk.

Huron then jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on the Platte Valley (Neb.) Companies team, then after Platte scored in the third and the fourth innings to get within 4-3, the Tigers had another 4-run burst in the bottom of the fourth to regain control of the game, eventually scoring three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the game 11-3.

Leyendecker went five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks.

Hurons offensive attack put 16 runners on base. Wenz had three singles and a pair of stolen bases. Tanner Gilbert also had three singles and stole a base.

Layne Wenzel had two singles and Carter Bischoff drew a pair of walks. Peterson stole a base.

Huron will take a 2-5 record on the road to Watertown on Thursday before hosting Post 320 on Friday for a doubleheader at Memorial Ballpark beginning at noon.
