The Huron High School Speech and Debate Team recently traveled on Saturday, Feb. 7, to Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School to compete at the Roosevelt Sweetstakes Tournament. Due to the One-Act Play Festival taking place on the same weekend, the traveling team was small, but mighty. Laycee Dorn (10th), Mara Pell (9th), Sophie Mehling (9th), and Gracie Warren (12th) did well to represent the team in their given events amidst some tough competition. Mara and Sophie placed 2nd in Duet Interp while Garcie placed 3rd in Dramatic Interp.
“We are soon approaching the end of our competition season,” Head Interp Coach Ben Halbkat says, “so we know that each tournament will be difficult and necessary as we work toward the National Qualifying Tournament.”
The Speech and Debate team will be traveling to Harrisburg this coming weekend (Friday, Feb. 13, and Saturday, Feb. 14) for the last regular tournament of the season. Following that, on Feb. 20-21 the NSDA National Qualifying Tournament will mark the end of the normal competition season, as the team then prepares for upcoming State competitions and eventually Nationals in the summer.
