HURON –– Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) has announced Tarryn Korkow, RN, surgery coordinator, as the recipient of the DAISY of the Year Award. This award is presented annually to one of the four recipients of DAISY of the Quarter, and the winner is selected by a committee composed of nurses and leaders.

Korkow works as a surgery coordinator and nurse at HRMC. Upon receiving the award, Korkow shared, “Any nurse will tell you, we don’t do this job for recognition or accolades. However, with that being said, it feels pretty incredible to join a group of DAISY honorees, and I’m so thankful that someone felt I was deserving. For me, it validates that what I do every day truly does matter.”

Other nurses nominated for the award included Heather Chaplin, RN, Lindsey McCaskell-Styer, RN, and Tessa Florey, RN.

In the submission of Korkow for the DAISY Award, her nomination wrote, “I came to HRMC for a procedure and was very nervous to be put under general anesthesia. Tarryn was so kind and compassionate for my sensitive situation.”

The nomination continued, “After surgery, when I opened my eyes, I saw her and felt her holding my hand. That was the most comforting feeling, knowing she was there and cared enough for me as a patient to hold my hand and to comfort me as I woke up. She showed exceptional compassion towards me and made me feel safe during a scary time. HRMC has exceptional patient care thanks to the wonderful nurses who work there.”

As evidenced in many DAISY Award nominations, being a nurse demands resilience, unwavering determination, and strength to face constant challenges. Korkow reflected on what the profession means to her, “Nursing has been a big part of my life for the last fifteen years. It has taught me compassion and empathy and has given me a true appreciation for life and health. I love what I do! Even on the hard days, I find myself thinking back on all of the little moments and patients that make my heart smile.”

For Korkow, nursing is about teamwork, compassion, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients every day. “My favorite part about nursing is who I share it with, and the opportunity we are given to make a difference in so many lives. I work alongside some of the best healthcare workers around, and we make it a priority every day to ensure that our patients have the most positive experience they can, whether it be the best day of their lives, the scariest, or just simply routine. It is such a special role!”

Korkow lives outside of Huron with her husband Adam, and their two boys, Oakley and Audi. In her free time, she enjoys following her boy’s sporting events, spending time with family, working out, family trips and anything outdoors!

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care that nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died at age 33 of complications from an auto-immune disease to honor his memory and thank nurses who provide exceptional compassion and kindness to patients.

Nominations may be submitted by staff, visitors, providers and patients, with forms available throughout the hospital and online at www.huronregional.org/recognition-awards. More information about the DAISY Award can be found online at www.DaisyFoundation.org.
