HURON — South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) released new numbers Friday that put a round number on the surge in Beadle County that has occurred over the past two weeks.
Friday, May 15 began with the county having 22 positive tests over the course of the COVID-19 virus in 2020. Friday, May 22 numbers revealed the county to now have 222 positive tests, an increase of 200 cases in two weeks.
The DOH numbers also confirmed a third death from COVID-19 in the county, though it was not the death many had been awaiting. The confirmed death from Link Snacks, Inc. (LSI) of a young woman in their employ that passed away has not yet been released by the state. For a death to be part of DOH numbers requires a death certificate to be presented to the state with COVID indicated as a cause of death. This process often takes anywhere from two to five days. The case confirmed Friday was not the death confirmed by LSI as the state still shows zero deaths between 20-29 years of age.
In questioning, DOH officials revealed that LSI currently has 74 active cases among employees. Of those 74 cases, 25 have recovered. The state is currently not tracking close contacts of LSI employees as they did with Smithfield and DemKota employees.
Mass testing continued Friday in the region for senior care facilities, as multiple counties saw significant surges in overall numbers in their tallies.
Beadle County has now totaled 222 positive tests, 394 negative tests, 58 recovered cases, three deaths, and 10 hospitalized cases after numbers released on Friday. As of Friday, testing had been done on 3.35% of Beadle County residents.
Across the Heartland region, there have been 280 positive tests, 1,119 negative tests, 87 recovered cases, four deaths, and 15 hospitalizations. The region has tested 3.39% of residents.
