HURON — Slightly more than 26% of the registered voters in Beadle County cast ballots in Tuesday’s city commission and primary elections.

According to the S.D. Secretary of State’s website, Beadle County shows 9,697 registered voters and 2,539 of them voted.

Statewide 28.22% those eligible to do so voted.

Business owner Rich Bragg defeated Drew Weinreis 929-755 for the open seat on the Huron City Commission, in a race that was decided in three of the city’s seven voting precints.

Totals showed a virtual dead heat in four of Huron’s precincts. In the other three precincts, however, Bragg enjoyed a 437-268 margin of victory.

Other Heartland-area elections saw Heidi Kleinsasser defeat Duane Casavan 31-27 for the position of town Trustee for Wessington. That election is subject to a recount.

In the only other local election, Jeff Luce and Kevin Clarke were both elected to the Wolsey-Wessington School Board. Luce ended with 196 votes, or 32% of ballots cast, while Clarke had 125 votes (21%). They topped a field of eight candidates for the two seats on the school district’s board of education.

In statewide elections, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden easily outdistanced Bernie Sanders, 77 to 23 percent in a race that was nearly without meaning after Sanders dropped out of the race earlier this spring.

Republican incumbents Senator Mike Rounds and U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson easily defeated challengers Scyller Borglum and Liz Marty May, respectively.

President Donald Trump was unopposed in the Republican presidential primary.
