HURON — South Dakota’s virus surge continued as the state added 2,001 new positive cases over the weekend along with 19 new deaths across the state.
Saturday saw the state jump over the 10,000 mark in active cases. After Sunday’s numbers from the South Dakota Department of Heath (DOH), the state now has 10,745 active virus cases.

The added deaths reported by the DOH over the weekend brings the state’s total to 375, with 152 of those occurring in October, just short of 100 more than the next-highest month in deaths in the state’s battle with COVID-19.

Beadle County reported 49 new positive cases over the weekend, bringing the county’s positive total to 1,199. With 19 new recovered cases over the weekend, the county saw active cases rise by 30 to 269, the high mark the county has ever seen.

Over the past week, Beadle has recorded 137 new positive cases as part of 315 new total cases. That is a 43.49% positive case rate. More notably, it’s the most new positive cases in one week of the entire pandemic that the county has recovered.

The Heartland Region cleared 2,000 positive cases in the region over the weekend. With 2,076 positive cases, 1,501 recovered cases, and 29 deaths across the seven-county region, the Heartland now reports 546 active cases, the highest the region has ever reported.

Jerauld County had a very active weekend, not in new cases, but in reported deaths. While the county reported one new positive case over the weekend, it also reported five new deaths in the county, bringing the county’s death total due to COVID-19 to 12.

Clark County cleared the 100 total positive cases mark with 6 new weekend cases. After Sunday’s DOH numbers, Clark reports 101 positive cases and has 48 active virus cases, the high the county has reported during the pandemic.
