Chamber to partner with city on new ‘World’s Largest Pheasant’

HURON — After months and years of discussion over the fate of the World’s Largest Pheasant, the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau Board of Directors, working with the City of Huron, is moving forward to construct a new World’s Largest Pheasant on the site to the north of Memorial Baseball Complex.

“We understand how important the nostalgia is behind the World’s Largest Pheasant and how important it is to Huron’s identity,” said Chamber and Visitors Bureau President and CEO Laurie Shelton. “We want to continue to put our best face forward to our hunters and visitors.”

Over the past several months the Chamber has worked to get bids for the new pheasant and recently commissioned Fiberglass Animals & Objects out of Seward, Neb., to build the new World’s Largest Pheasant.

The City of Huron is working together with the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau to determine the exact location and providing input for ideas of a landscape design. The timeline would be to complete the footings and foundation work this year before frost sets in and the new Pheasant is set to arrive by early spring of 2021.

“In February of 2019, a survey was conducted by the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau to help determine what the public wanted. We sent the survey to all members, did a press release and also posted the survey on Facebook” said Angie Uttecht – Chairman of the Board of Directors.

“The overall survey response showed the community’s desire to have the World’s Largest Pheasant displayed on property owned by the City. After consultation with engineers and advisors it was determined that due to the expenses that would be incurred repairing or attempting to move the existing pheasant along with purchasing the building upon which it sits, the most prudent move would be to build a new pheasant on city-owned property. With that in mind, it was decided to wait to finalize anything until it got closer to the end of the lease, which will take place at the end of October.”

Shelton noted that the new pheasant will be slightly larger than the current bird, to make sure that the World’s Largest Pheasant continues to roost in Huron.

“We are excited for the future of the newest World’s Largest Pheasant and look forward to rolling out signage and fundraising campaign” said Uttecht.
