HURON — With Mayor Gary Harrington absent, Commissioner Bryan Smith presided over a fast-moving Huron City Commission meeting Monday, which included more than 50 people hired for seasonal summer positions with the library, Parks and Recreation Department, at the Broadland Creek Pro Shop, and with Splash Central Park.
Two special event on-sale alcoholic beverage licenses were approved for Top Floor Events. The first is for the Heartland Pool and Dart Tournament at the Huron Arena on April 1. The second is for a Chamber Mixer on April 11 at Centennial Stone Church. These were approved in the consent agenda.
The commission approved an update to the quit claim deed previously approved for a parcel of land adjacent to the Northwestern Energy gas peaking plant addition. The land was transferred from the City of Huron to Greater Huron Development for the purpose of Northwestern Energy purchasing the parcel for future development. No current plans are in place for the land.
A second reading of Ordinance No. 2253-16-94 to add Michigan Ave. from 13th St. SW at Arizona Ave. to 15th St. SW to the emergency snow route was approved.
Solid Waste director Dale Fortin spoke to the commission regarding Resolution No. 2023-04, explaining that it authorized signatures on a grant application for solid waste to apply for a hook truck and waste collection containers as part of the build of the new solid waste facility. The grant is for funds up to $138,626. This was approved.
Commissioners also:
• Approved the appointment of election workers.
• Approved the hire of Jasmine Field for a 911 Telecommunicator position.
• Approved posting and advertising for the IT Specialist position.
• Approved Sarah Rogers for supplementary benefits upon completion of 1040 probationary hours.
The commission adjourned to executive session to address a personnel matter.
