HURON — Using their water utility bill for free access to the rubble site over the weekend, Huron residents saved more than $3,800 in the annual citywide cleanup, Solid Waste Superintendent Dale Fortin said Monday.
In a report to the City Commission, he said 261 households took advantage of the cleanup to bring out rubble, metal, tires, tree branches and garbage Thursday through Saturday.
A total of 79.52 tons of materials were hauled out. Despite the rainy conditions, that was slightly higher than last year’s total of 78.52 tons, he said.
In a related matter, Fortin said the free access/drop off site remains open to the public for people to bring out grass clippings and branches. The parking lot area is muddy and city workers are trying to keep it as dry as possible.
If people can’t access the site due to the wet conditions, they can bring grass clippings and branches to the rubble site during operating hours.
Commissioner Doug Kludt publicly thanked Cornerstones Career Learning Center English as a Second Language students and staff for once again picking up trash. It was picked up in the downtown area and at Ravine Lake by a number of volunteers.
Meanwhile, the commission won’t meet and city offices will be closed next Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.
