HURON — Beadle County commissioners reviewed potential districts presented by county auditor Jill Hanson after the 2020 census adjusted population numbers within the county. Districts don’t need to be finalized within the county until February 2021, but commissioners discussed the ideas of splitting townships or outlying communities within the county versus dividing parts of the city of Huron to even population distribution among the districts.
Highway superintendent Merl Hanson opened the meeting by giving an update on work by the highway department done over the month. Recent rains have slowed progress, though most major projects were complete within the county before moisture became an issue.
Hanson reported that the new building is receiving inside footings this week and should have walls built this week or next week.
Hanson’s report prompted discussion of the holiday schedule among the commission for county employees. Christmas and New Year’s falling on Saturday will mean that the courthouse is closed and the holiday will be awarded on the Friday before for county employees.
Resolution 10-02-21 regarding the plat of the LeGrand Outlet was approved.
Commissioners approved the hire of a new jailer and a clerical nurse at the county nurse’s office.
The commission also approved a resolution outlining the Beadle County Hazard Mitigation Plan.
Commissioners went into executive session to end the meeting. The next county commission meeting is Nov. 9 at the courthouse in the commission room at 9 a.m.
