HURON – With the move of the highway department into their new building and the weed board into the old highway building, multiple items were found to be surplus within both departments.
This spurred the county to hold an online-only surplus auction. Beadle County Commissioners approved Ben Meyer to host the auction with an end date of June 28.
Highway supervisor Jason Fritzsche updated the commission on spring road work.
He noted that the work on the Virgil Road has been completed and billed already.
The county will be working to clean bridge decks and patching pot holes before beginning chip sealing on May 31.
The commission discussed the future sale of the current weed board building on the corner of Custer Ave. and Hwy. 14.
Beadle Director of Equalization Kim Eichstadt joined the discussion of the zoning of the property and adjacent properties to understand how to potentially market the building and property. Eichstadt’s office performed an assessment of the building for potential pricing purposes.
Lori Moen of Grow S.D. presented the different programs that her organization offers within the state and the things that Beadle residents could take advantage of to assist in times of financial need.
Commissioners addressed conflicting motions regarding funding for Huron Housing Authority. In November, the commission adopted a motion to give $25,000 toward staffing for the housing rehab position. In January, a special budget hearing was held to address adding funding to Huron Housing in the 2023 budget as the initial motion was adopted after the 2023 budget had been approved. At the January hearing, Housing was budgeted $20,000 toward the same program, rather than $25,000.
After discussion, the November amount was proposed, and the January amount was an approved budgetary amount. A motion was made to adjust the amount to $25,000, but it died for a lack of a second.
The next Beadle County Commission meeting will be June 13 at 9 a.m. in the commission room at the courthouse.
