Galen Wallum of Manchester was presented the Harvey Dunn Award during the ninth annual De Smet Plein Air that was held Aug. 11-13 in De Smet. This prestigious award is given annually to an artist that exemplifies the style of painting of Harvey Dunn, who has promoted the arts and been a supporter of De Smet’s Plein Air event. Above right: Accepting the People’s Choice award is Tom Dimock, at left, from Columbia Heights, Minn. Presenting the award are Susan Purintun, chairman of the Harvey Dunn Society, and Gary Marx, Harvey Dunn Society board member from Vienna. Iroquois artist Julie Waldner is shown in a field painting during the event.
A record 69 artists from six states took part in the Plein Air event, which included young artists who painted in a children’s workshop. Artists were from Maryland, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
