HURON — Kristen Hughes, MD, internal medicine physician, successfully passed the required examinations and is now board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), according to Jennifer Kalahar, CPME, director of clinics for HRMC.
Board certification is voluntary and includes a rigorous exam that tests a physician’s ability to diagnose and treat patients with a broad range of conditions. To maintain certification, physicians can participate in activities that assess knowledge of the latest scientific developments and changes in practice and in specialty areas.
“We are grateful to have Kristen as part of our team here at HRMC Physicians Clinic,” said Kalahar. “Our patients have appreciated her care saying she is friendly, knowledgeable and kind. Many are excited that there is a female doctor in internal medicine available for their care needs.”
As an internist, Dr. Hughes has special knowledge and skills required to care for the general medical needs of adults, which include acute and chronic illnesses, disease prevention, screening, patient education and follow-up care from hospitalization. As an internist, she also takes care of acutely ill patients in the hospital.
Board certification from ABIM is the highest standard in internal medicine and signifies that physicians have demonstrated to their peers and to the public that they have the clinical judgment, skills and attitudes essential for providing excellent patient care.
Dr. Hughes holds a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in St. Kitts & Nevis.
She completed her internal medicine residency at Wayne State University in Michigan.
When she’s not working, Dr. Hughes enjoys spending time with family, baking and running. She is currently accepting new patients and appointments can be made by calling 605-353-7660 or online at www.hrmcphysiciansclinic.org.
