Huron Public Library plans Zombie Walk and more in October

Posted

HURON — October is a busy month for youth at the Huron Public Library. Teens in grades six through 12 will kick off the month celebrating Teen Read Week™, a national adolescent literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).
Held annually in October since 1998, Teen Read Week encourages teens to be regular readers and library users. The 2017 event begins today, featuring the theme ‘Unleash Your Story.”
Library staff, afterschool providers, and educators are encouraged to leverage this theme to encourage teens to tell their own stories, as well as find stories, biographies, autobiographies, folktales, and more in their local library.
Wednesday at 4 p.m., teens are collaborating with Shirley Peterson, Betty Heidemann and Bernadette Brown from Brandt, to provide quilts and stuffed animals to youth who read. Shirley and Betty make quilts and Bernadette provides stuffed animals to area organizations.
The teens will read stories to children and present a reading blanket and reading buddy donated by the quilting group to the first 25 children who attend the program.

Zombie Walk
The third annual Zombie Walk will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Lion and Lioness Clubs have invited area children and youth zombies to amble around the Great Scarecrow Festival, that will also be held in Campbell Park. The walk is open to all ages; children under sixth grade are required to be accompanied by an adult.

Everyone will meet in the library at 7 p.m. to begin the trek. Following the walk, elementary children and younger are invited to view the scarecrows and receive a treat from the library.
Prizes will be given to the teen with the best costume and the teen zombie with the best amble. Following the walk, teens are invited to a Zombie Buffet and a scary PG-13 movie.

Murder at the Ball
Saturday, Oct. 28, at 6 p.m., teens are invited to “Murder at the Walgrave Astoria Costume Ball.”
“It’s time again for the annual Walgrave Astoria Costume Ball. The who’s-who of the town are preparing their fabulous costumes for the exclusive event. The Walgrave Astoria, founded in 1907, has been cited as the grandest hotel experience in the world! It is a preeminent luxury hotel for kings, presidents, ambassadors, stars of stage and jetsetters from around the world. Excitement is buzzing in the air as Nicole Wilton, Toyoka, and Zangelina Holie are rumored to be on the VIP guest list this year!”
Youth will dress in costume, dine and mingle while gathering clues to solve the mystery. Have your teen stop by the library to be assigned a character!

Trick or Treat bag contest
From Oct. 10-20, children are encouraged to participate in the Halloween Trick or Treat Bag contest. Open to patrons of all ages, patrons will submit decorated Trick or Treat bags to be judge for prizes.
Prizes will be awarded for most original, scariest and best character. The bags will be judged for creativity, humor, workmanship and visual appeal. Bags and crafting supplies will be provided free by the library. Stop by the library for more information!
