HARTFORD — Kenneth Martin “Ken” Tonsager, Sr., 90, of Hartford, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Monday, August 21, 2017, at the Sanford Hospice Cottages in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, August 24, at Christ Lutheran Church in Hartford. Committal services will be 1 p.m., Friday in the Black Hills National Cemetery.
Ken was born February 23, 1927, in Brookings County to Edon and Thea Tonsager. He grew up near Oldham where he graduated from Oldham High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950, until his honorable discharge in 1952. He was united in marriage to Darlene November 25, 1953 in Miller.
He graduated from SDSU with a BS degree in Agriculture Education and taught for seven years. He then returned to SDSU and earned his Masters in Education. He was employed by the Farmers Home Administration, was a member of NARF, the American Legion and the Christ Lutheran Church in Hartford.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; children, Ken (Gayle) Tonsager of Hot Springs, Kristine (Ted) Koch of Poynette, Wisc., Karl (Denise) Tonsager of Renner; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert, Gerald, Herold, Elaine Lewellen, Thelma Hagedorn, and Annie Tonsager.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of the Kinzley Funeral Home in Hartford.
