HURON — Safety City is taking place this week at the National Guard Armory on the State Fairgrounds. The health and safety training and workshops teach almost 100 kids a day about different topics where precautions are necessary, the program is one week long with three different groups a day.
American Legion Post 7 sponsors Safety City, and also assemble the cars and buildings used in the road safety portion of the program.
Local organizations and volunteers get together to run the program and organize the various workshops.
Throughout the week the kids are visited by Louie the Lightning Bug from Northwestern to teach them about electrical safety. They will get to ride the school bus and talk about bus safety, also local police and firemen come to teach about gun safety and fire safety.
The program will continue through the week and today there will be playground safety, road safety, and the kids will learn about animal safety from the Beadle County Humane Society.
