National Library Week begins Monday

Posted

The Huron Public Library will be celebrating National Library Week, beginning Monday until Saturday, April 15. National Library Week is an annual event started by the American Library Association in 1958 which most libraries participate in each year.
This year the theme was thought of by Demco Library Supplies, “Libraries change lives and communities,” which Huron Public Library chose as an alternative theme to the American Library Association’s theme “Libraries transform.”
A series of fun activities and events for all ages will be hosted throughout the week at the Library, including give aways such as book marks and book bags, refreshments, and a fun atmosphere with interesting discussions.
The Peeps contest is hosted every year around Easter, when the public registers to participate and make dioramas.
These will be on display at the library, where the public is invited to judge and vote on the dioramas during National Library Week.
The theme for the contest is “Peeps build a better world,” which will lead up to the Summer Reading Program as the same theme.

The first year was mostly entries of dioramas from staff, last year there was a shift, as mostly the public entered the contest, and this year there is a high interest from the public for the contest. The final winners will be named by event sponsors, Office Peeps, on Monday, April 17.
There will be an adult jewelry-making class on Monday taught by Kerey Huber, where necklaces will be made using semi precious stones. There are 25 spots available per class, and there will be two classes, one in the afternoon and one in the evening.
Adults can also participate in painting classes at the Library, with step by step guidance and pictures available for use.
For the teens, there will be a vote for favorite books and authors throughout the week and the winning book will be reveled at a pizza party event where the teens will get together, socialize, discuss, guess on the winning book and watch the announcement, which will be televised.
The kids will be having a jelly bean contest, where the amount of jelly beans in a jar will be guessed and the winner will receive the jelly beans and a prize of choice out of options such as T-shirts, umbrellas, games, and stationary.
“We love to find the little holidays out there,” Shirley Apley, Library Director said.
“Lost Sock Day” was hosted back in May, where a toy washing machine was filled with children’s socks and the winner was to guess the amount of socks to win a prize.
All departments have specific events tailored to age groups. The children’s department is run by Glenda Maxted, Mary Olson is in charge of the teen’s department, and the adult programs are run by Angela Bailey.
The Huron Public Library’s calendar is available online to view all upcoming events, with a quick and easy registration process also on the website.
“Libraries are more than reading books, they are social and community-orientated,” Shirley Apley says. “People should walk in and feel as if they are at home.”
A friendly atmosphere and homely feeling in the library is created by both the welcoming staff and the friendly members, making it a wonderful place to go for events and social meetings, to relax and read, or meet people and participate in one of the many engaging activities the library has to offer.
