NFMC music awards

HURON — Emily Wedel, daughter of Brad and Helene Wedel of Yale, was recently awarded the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) 2020 President’s Gold Cup (sixth cup).  She is the first recipient of the President’s Cup in the state of South Dakota.  

Wedel received 12 consecutive superiors in Piano Solo and four consecutive superiors in Piano Concerto to receive this award. This is the highest award possible in the NFMC Junior Music Clubs Festival program.  

Jaime O’Neill, son of Kelly and Carmen O’Neill, received the third gold cup in Piano Solo.

Second gold cups were presented to Kate Hamilton (Piano Solo) and Victoria Larson (Piano Duet).  

First gold cups were awarded to Piano Solo: Jeremy Hofer, Alexandra Hohm, Audri Hohm, Jonathan Koel, Joy Trautman; Piano Duet: McKenzie Hofer, Jonathan Koel.

Students receiving the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Study award for five or more years of study included: 

Five years:  Cameron Cutshaw, Jordyn Cutshaw, Jonathan Koel, Micah Larson
Six years:  Maggie Decker, Sarah Fuerst, Kolby Hofer, Elaina Hohm
Seven years: Kate Hamilton
Eight years: Victoria Larson, Joy Trautman, Jed Waldner
Nine years:  Isabel Gilbert, McKenzie Hofer, Abby Trandall
Thirteen years:  Jaime O’Neill, Abby Thomas, Emily Wedel.

Joy Trautman was selected to the S.D. Middle School All-State Jazz Band for piano.  

Kate Hamilton received the Rosanne Spiehs Music Scholarship for piano study at Wolsey-Wessington School.  

McKenzie Hofer and Jaime O’Neill received Superior ratings in the piano division at the SDHSAA Region 4 Solo/Ensemble Contest.  

Students who received NFMC certificates for superior plus ratings at the Junior Music Festival included Jaime O’Neill, Piano Solo, and Emily Wedel, both Piano Solo and Piano Concerto; superior ratings in Piano Solo: Anna Arhart, Avery Ashbaugh, Cameron Cutshaw, Jordyn Cutshaw, Maggie Decker, Heather Escobar Reyes, Sarah Fuerst, Isabel Gilbert, Kate Hamilton, Hadassah Helkenn, Jeremy Hofer, Kolby Hofer, McKenzie Hofer, Alexandra Hohm, Audri Hohm, Elaina Hohm, Jonathan Koel, Micah Larson, Victoria Larson, Emmersyn McGillvrey,  Abby Trandall, Joy Trautman, Jed Waldner; Piano Duet:  Alexandra Hohm, Audri Hohm, Elaina Hohm, Jonathan Koel, McKenzie Hofer, Victoria Larson; Hymn Playing:  Kate Hamilton, Hadassah Helkenn.

Graduating seniors from the studio include:  Jaime O’Neill, Abigail Thomas and Emily Wedel. All seniors have studied with Beverly Bigge since Kindergarten.

Bigge is a nationally certified teacher of music with the Music Teachers National Association and maintains a private studio in Huron.
