Olsen, Wheeler record career firsts at DSFS

Posted

HURON — A pair of Minnesota drivers recorded first on Saturday at Dakota State Fair Speedway.
Chad Olsen of Hendricks, Minn., who is a regular at the Huron track, recorded his first-ever feature win in the WISSOTA late model division, while Dan Wheeler of Savage, Minn. Collected his first-ever feature win at DSFS in the WISSOTA Midwest modified division.
Olsen is a veteran on the track, but is in his rookie season in the late model division. He had his 10c late model dialed in as he went virtually unchallenged from start to finish in the 20-lap feature race.
The biggest obstacle for Olsen in his quest for the victory Saturday was of his own making. With just four laps remaining he narrowly escaped a meeting with the retaining wall in turns three and four as he powered around the track in the high groove.
While Olsen’s clinch on the top spot was solid, the battle for the next four spots was anything but.
Dustin Arthur of St. Lawrence, who started outside of Olsen on the front row, occupied the second spot for the first 13 laps of the race. He was replaced by Scott Ward of Watertown, who started in the inside of the fifth row, the final seven laps.
Chad Becker of Aberdeen would make his way past Arthur on the final lap to claim the third spot.
Arthur was fourth, followed by David McDonald of Huron and Kent Arment of Aberdeen.
Becker and Olsen inked wins in the late model heat races.
Wheeler would also lead from start to finish to earn his feature win. However, his trek to get there was a little more eventful.
Wheeler started on the inside of the third row, but found himself just one car away from the lead after two of the top four cars in the field tangled on the opening lap.
The incident on the opening lap included the car of Brad Kopecky of Miller flipping  between the first and second turns.
When the race restarted, Wheeler was able to slip past pole sitter Cole DeJong to snag the lead, and led the rest of the way in the 15-lap feature race.
The Midwest modified main event would turn out to be anything but smooth, as two more caution flags flew before reaching the midway point.
The first caution resulted in a pileup on the back straightaway, which sent one driver to the hospital for precautionary reasons, while the second included the event’s second roll.
Defending track champion Brock Hess of Sioux Falls had his car airborne as it flipped and landed back on its wheels near the entrance of turn three on the sixth lap. Despite some heavy equipment damage, everyone involved in the second incident emerged unscathed.
The final 10 laps went caution free, allowing Wheeler to collect his first win. Lorin Johnson of Miller was second, followed by Scott Hansen of Garden City, Kyle Knouse of Huron and Lane Johnson of Miller.
Lane Johnson, Hess and Adam Brotherton of Huron won the Midwest modified heat races.

Dale Tomes of Dell Rapids found his way back to Victory Lane on Saturday to earn his first victory at the speedway since May of 2015 in the WISSOTA super stock division. He led from start to finish in the 15-lap feature race to earn his fourth career feature win at DSFS.
Casey Hanson of Badger would tail Tomes across the finish line, however, a jump start on a restart just four laps from the end, cost him a pair of positions in the final running order.
Kelly Duffy of Winner would claim the second spot, followed by Kip Myers of Ethan. Tomas was fourth, while Kipp Degroot of Platte was fifth.
Defending super stock track champion Cole Searing of Huron won one of the two heat races, but was forced to retire from the main event after brushing the wall and suffering a flat tire on the second lap of the feature race. Jeremy North of Huron won the other super stock heat race.
Leonard Ferguson of Kyle won for the second time in his career at DSFS, with a victory Saturday in the WISSOTA street stock feature race.
After starting on the pole, Ferguson led throughout the feature race. Cole Phillips of Winner held off Michael Bogh of Huron for the second spot, while Mathew Goth of Madison and Walter Cable of Geddes, rounded out the top five in the fourth and fifth, spots, respectively.
Blayne Baloun of St. Lawrence and Ferguson won the street stock heat races.
Taking advantage of the restart on the third lap of the 15-lap main event, Tyler McDonald of Huron inked the 11th win of his career in the WISSOTA modified division on Saturday.
McDonald made his way past Duke Erickson of Watertown, who had led the first two laps, to snag a lead he would not relinguish.
Kent Arment of Aberdeen, who started alongside McDonald in the second row, was second, followed by David Carlson of Huron, Erickson and Nick Grehl of Hitchcock.
McDonald also won the lone heat race for the modifieds.
All five classes will be back in action at Dakota State Fair Speedway at 7 p.m. On Saturday. It will be the final event before the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series visits the Huron oval on July 1.
Advance tickets for the World of Outlaws event are currently on sale at www.slspromotions.ticketforce.com.
